Margaret Jane Sands Sutton
Margaret Sutton, 93, widow of Robert M. Sutton, and beloved mother of Diane Tracy, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, the 18th of June at The Oaks at The Marshes after an extended illness. Margaret was born in Chicago, Illinois, on March 19, 1915, to Ruth Reed Sands and Harold Given Sands. The family moved to Pittsburgh, PA, where she was joined by two brothers James D. Sands and Robert R. Sands. Margaret attended Westminster College, New Wilmington, PA, and The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. She worked as a fashion artist for Kaufmann's Department Store and continued to enjoy her art work during her lifetime, painting oil portraits of family, friends and favorite family dogs. She and her husband Robert, enjoyed their many travels around the world during their 53 years of marriage. Margaret inspired all who knew her with her sharp wit and generous spirit and was a true example of a life well-lived.
Margaret was a charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Upper St. Clair, PA, where she served as a Deacon and a Sunday School teacher. She was a member of the South Hills Art League and the Brookside Women's Club. After retiring to Palm City, Florida in 1986, she was a member of Palm City Presbyterian Church.
She leaves to treasure her memory her daughter, Diane Tracy and her husband, Richard; her granddaughter, Christine Sellars Holley and her husband, David of Anderson, SC; her grandson, David A. Sellars and his wife, Wendi of Roswell, GA; and her great-granddaughters, her namsakes Katherine Sutton Sellars and Margaret Abbott Sellars of Roswell, GA. She also leaves behind beloved sister-in-law, Bette Hallisey of Newnan, GA; nieces, Sarah Sands White, Patricia Sands Bruner, Nicolette Sands Herrera, Michael Hallisey Greene and Cathy Gratzinger Riffert and nephew, J.P. Hallisey.
A memorial service led by Dr. John Wall will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church followed by a reception in Liston Hall.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church.
