Julian Laurens Carter, Sr.
SAVANNAH – Julian Laurens Carter, Sr., age 85, died on Monday, August 4, 2008, at Azalealand Nursing Home after a short illness. A former Comptroller and Executive Assistant to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers District Engineer, Savannah, with Top Secret Clearance, his portrait has been hung in the Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees at the Savannah Office. He was a past president of the Savannah Chapter of the Society of American Military Engineers and was also a designee on the Board of U.S. Civil Service Examiners for the Savannah District.
Mr. Carter was born at Augusta, Georgia, raised in Anderson, SC, and lived in Savannah for the past fifty years.
He was a graduate of the University of Georgia and was a member of the Sons of the Revolution in the State of Georgia.
During World War II, he served in the 65th Troop Carrier Squadron, 5th U.S. Army Air Force. He served in Lae, New Guinea, Biak and Morotai Island Territories of Indonesia, Leyte and Mindoro Islands in the Philippines.
Mr. Carter was a member of Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church and served on its Administrative Board and Finance Committee. He and his wife shared the treasurer responsibilities for seventeen years. He was treasurer and finance chairman of the Candler Hospital Auxiliary, a volunteer tax consultant to the elderly for the American Association of Retired Persons, and a volunteer income tax assistant for the Internal Revenue Service. Mr. Carter also taught Advanced Accounting at night at Armstrong Junior College.
Mr. Carter was preceded in death by a son, William Walton Walt Carter of Atlanta, his twin brother, Clarke L. Carter of Savannah, brothers, Billy Carter of Columbia, SC and Alston Carter of Gainesville, GA, two sisters, Anne Magnitsky of Bogalusa, LA and Mary Hagood Pope of Savannah.
Surviving are his wife, Georgia Wynn Carter of Savannah; three daughters, Georgia Shapiro and her husband, Bob, of Newnan, GA, Juliann Barthelmess of Savannah and Wynn Sullivan and her husband, Robert, of Savannah; a son, Julian Laurens Carter, Jr. of Lincolnton, GA; a brother, Roy C. Carter, Sr. of Eustis, FL; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 10, 2008, from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm, at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, August 11, 2008, at Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church with Rev. M. Creede Hinshaw and Dr. A. Jason Shirah officiating.
Interment will follow in the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
