Celebrating the life of
Belle Miller (Patti) King
Passed away on December 08, 2018
Belle Miller King
1923-2018
Belle Miller King (Patti) passed away peacefully on December 8, 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years Duncan Rice King, her brother Hilary Herbert Miller, Jr. (Herbie), and her sister Elizabeth Miller Matthews. She was the daughter of the late Hilary Herbert Miller, Sr. and Idabelle Wyness Miller (Bunny). She is survived by her daughter Carole King Henry and son-in-law Julian Huguenin Henry of Danielsville GA, her grandson Jason Anthony Henry and his wife Emily Matts Henry of Washington DC, her brother Jack Wyness Miller and his wife Betty of Tybee Island, her sister-in-law Shirley Hallman Miller of Savannah, and numerous nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Savannah High, she married Duncan in 1941. While he was stationed in England during World War II, she attended business college and became a stenographer. She later became an administrative secretary to the Fire Chief at the Naval Yard in Charleston where they lived in the 70s and 80s. She was active in garden clubs, a certified flower show and camellia judge, and a past president of the Garden Council of Savannah. She and a friend, Ann Mallory, led the effort to convince Chatham County Commissioners to donate land for a botanical garden on the Southeast side of Savannah. They raised the money to purchase a historic farmhouse for the Gardens, had it moved to the property, and directed its renovation. Later on, she oversaw the addition of a pond area and used local Boy Scouts to build trails while earning their Eagle Scout ranks. The Savannah Botanical Gardens, operated under the Savannah Area Council of Garden Clubs, is now in its 28th year of operation.
Patti left Savannah in 2014 to be closer to her daughter and her family as her health began to decline. Her family expresses its appreciation to all who helped care for her during this time especially the staff of Arbor Terrace of Athens and Bridgeway Hospice.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 15, 2018 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel with Rev. Dr. Benton C. Martin officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service.
Interment will follow in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her name can be made to the Savannah Botanical Gardens, Bridgeway Hospice in Watkinsville, or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
May the thoughts of knowing that friends and family share in your grief be of comfort to the King family for the loss of your dear loved one. Please know that God is close to the broken-hearted and he will continue to help you get through these most difficult times “Psalm 147:3” and “2 Corinthians 1:3,4”

So grateful to have known this sweet lady. Patti had a very large impact on our neighborhood when we both lived in Whitfield Park. She helped start and organize our first ever Garden Club, which united many strangers, turning neighbors into friends. I loved her true Southern accent as well as her lady like manners. Thank you for sharing her sweet photo.
