John Henry Haslam

John Henry Harry Haslam, Sr. 86 died on August 28, 2008 at Hospice Savannah. He was a native of Savannah. He was a l940 graduate of Benedictine Military School and a l944 graduate of the University of Georgia.

He joined the accounting firm of Arthur D. Hancock & Co. later joining the O'Brien & Spillane accounting firm, the predecessor firm to Spillane, Rhoads, Lebey, Cann & Seig. He remained with the firm when Price Waterhouse acquired it in l987. In l990, he joined the accounting firm of Hancock Askew & Co. LLP from which he retired in l997 after 50 years in the accounting profession.

He became a member of the Hibernian Society in l957 serving as president in l993-l994. He was a founding father of St. Vincent's Academy School board in l976, a founding member of the Sinn Fein Society when it was organized in l958 and a founding and honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5588. He was active in numerous Catholic organizations including serving on the original finance board for the Diocese of Savannah, the Notre Dame Book Store board and various boards and committees of the Catholic Community for which he provided years of volunteer tax and accounting service. He was a communicant of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church.

His father John Henry Haslam, his mother Velma Nelson Haslam Purdy, his stepfather Clifford J. Purdy, Sr, his brothers L. Nelson Haslam, Sr. and Clifford J. Purdy, Jr. and his great granddaughter Charlotte Anne Haslam preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lois Cooper Haslam, daughter and son-in-law Velma Haslam Walters and Ron Walters, son and daughter-in-law J. Harry Haslam, Jr. and Kimi Haslam all of Savannah, daughter and son-in-law Ann Haslam Mason and Bob Mason of Asheboro, N.C. as well as his grandchildren John and Laura Haslam, Ryan and Amber Haslam, Mark Haslam all of Savannah, Ron and Liz Walters of Bitburg, Germany, Pat Walters of Kauai, HI, Chris Walters of Washington, DC, Bobby Mason of Asheboro, N.C., Emilee and Matt Baxter of Atlanta and Kathryn Hoffman of Richmond Hill, great grandchildren Claire Haslam and Ella Baxter, sister-in-law Mary Ann Haslam Butler, brother-in-law Cameron Mixon and a number of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Sunday, August 31, 2008 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church with a rosary service at 6:30 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Monday, September 1, 2008 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the Catholic Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be his grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be members of The Hibernian Society.
