December 10, 1924 – August 31, 2008
Joseph A. Christiansen, 83, passed away August 31, 2008, at Candler Hospital following a long illness. A native of Savannah, and life long resident of Isle of Hope, his family operated a dairy farm in the 1930's. He enlisted in the Navy following Pearl Harbor and was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War.
Joe was a founding member of the Isle of Hope Volunteer Fire Department and remained an active member of the department for over 50years. He retired from the department with the rank of Captain. His dedication to the Fire Department spread to his family and all of his children have served as active firefighters. Lucille, his wife of sixty years, was one of the first female volunteer firefighters in the state of Georgia.
Retired from Southeastern Air Conditioning Company in 1990, Joe was a long time member of the Local 188 Plummers, Pipefitters and Air Conditioning Mechanics Union.
Joe was an avid golfer and played in the Bacon Park Saturday Blitz for many years. He shared his joy of hunting and fishing with his children.
Joe was preceded in death by parents George Martin, Sr., and Anna Brunson Christiansen, brother, George Martin, Jr., and sister, Siverine Griffin.
His wife Lucille Carmel Guild Christiansen and their six children survive him:
Sons, Joseph, Jr. & Beth, Doug & Claudia, Tom & Debi, Steve & Kathy, of Savannah, GA, and Bob & Cindy of Maryville, TN. Daughter, Cindy & Bill Thomas of Tucson, AZ.
Grandchildren Elizabeth Harn of Knoxville, TN, Stephanie Christiansen-LaRocco of Chicago, IL, Deana Duffy of Richmond Hill, GA, Mary Christiansen of Athens, GA, Shelly, Tracy, Reann, Tony, Andy, and William of Savannah, GA.
He has three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will be receiving friends at Fox and Weeks Funeral Home, 7200 Hodgson Memorial Drive from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2nd.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 3rd, at 11:00 a.m. at the Our Lady of Good Hope Chapel on Isle of Hope. Burial services will follow at Hillcrest Abby Memorial Park.
