Edward Cohen Smith

Savannah - Edward Cohen Smith, 88, died September 9, 2008 at Hospice Savannah, Inc. He was born in Bryan County, son of the late Coy and Alma Smith. During World War II, Mr. Smith served in the Field Artillery of the United States Army as a Master Sergeant in charge of firing 240 Howitzers. He retired from the Army National Guard after 25 years of service and also served in the Army Reserves. He retired as a Captain from the Savannah Fire Department after 28 years of service and also worked on the waterfront as a Clerk and Checker with the I.L.A. Local 1475 for 25 years. He was a member of Calvary in Savannah where he and his late wife started the Care Package for the homeless in Savannah, member of the Irish Jasper Greens, 32nd. Degree Scottish Rite Mason and an avid fisherman. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances Smith, son, Edward Cohen "Coby" Smith, Jr., sister, Betty Lawton, brother, Carlos E. "Curley" Smith and brother-in-law, Rev. Louis T. Stokes.
Surviving are two sons, Louis Murray Smith and his wife, Yvonne Dixon Smith of Savannah; Randall Wayne Smith and his wife, Creola Smith of Savannah; brother-in-law, William Stokes and his wife, Sue Stokes of Ellijay; sister-in-law, Patricia Perkins and her husband, Howard of Hanover, MA; grandchildren, Lindsay, Patrick, Wendy, Eddie, Sarah, Nelson, Wayne, Andrew and Jennifer; great grandchildren, Evan and Jackson and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, September 11, 2008 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.
Funeral: 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 12, 2008 at Calvary in Savannah.
Burial: Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park.
