Joseph Thomas Mooney

January 22, 1928 - November 10, 2008

Joseph Thomas Mooney

Joseph Thomas Mooney, age 80, passed away on Monday, November 10, 2008, after a brief illness.

Born January 22, 1928, Joe was the son of the late Thomas J. Mooney and Sadie McEllinn Mooney. Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Sara, his brother, Thomas, and by his son, Joseph T. Mooney, Jr. A native of Savannah, Joe attended Benedictine Military School and graduated from Savannah High School. A talented athlete, he played football at both schools and was later a noted boxer in the Savannah area. He took up golf and became one of the better players and a familiar face at Bacon Park, Mary Calder, and Bonaventure Par 3 golf courses. Joe worked as a firefighter for the Savannah Fire Department in the 1950s, and in the 1960s was co-owner of Savannah's Lamppost Lounge. An avid chess player, Joe was a long-time member of the U.S. Chess Federation. Friends remember Joe for his love of books, especially those about new ideas in mathematics or physics, and for his eagerness to discuss those ideas with kindred spirits. We will never forget Joe's vital love of life and learning and the ever-present twinkle in his eye.

Funeral services will be private.

GUEST BOOK

Joe's honesty and integrity can be matched by few. There was never a question in one's mind about where you stood with Joe Mooney. Thanks for the advice; opinions; and the peanuts, too. We'll miss you, Joe

- Patrick Beytagh, Savannah, GA

We were very sorry to hear about Joe's passing. He was always a lot of fun to be around and just a really nice, friendly guy. He will be missed by many. Our Deepest Sympathy,

- Willie an old football buddyand Jean Remley, Savannah, GA

Joe had an unending curiosity about everything touching the human condition. Recently, he began thinking about the connection between quantum physics and other realities. Joe, I hope the answers are everything you could have hoped and more. I will miss your unique outlook and love for learning; you will forever be a part of me.

- Tommy, Savannah, GA

Joe was certainly unique; he was what many might call a 'character.' Perhaps unconventional in many ways, Joe had a heart of gold and a deep loyalty to his friends.

- Helen Waters, Savannah, GA

Joe was like Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin, Ayn Rand, Gregor Mendel, Louis Leakey, and a barkeeper, rolled into one. Thank You for teaching me how to play chess. We miss You!

- James Waters, Springfield, GA

Joe was good friend of the family and will be sorely missed. The friendly debates he engaged in with my grandfather, father and two uncles at the golf shop were epic and always made me laugh. We will miss you Joe.

- Robert W. Waters, Springfield, GA

Joe performed one of the most amazing athletic feats in history. The 18 hole score for his third round of golf was 69. He hit perhaps 200,000 practice balls in the year separating his first and second rounds. Awesome!!!
