Johnie W. Slater, Sr.

Johnie W. Slater, Sr., 78, died Thursday, November 20, 2008 in Savannah.

Mr. Slater was born on February 21, 1930 in Ludiwici, GA, the son of the late Samuel and Minnie Lee Slater. He moved to Screven County at an early age and upon graduation from high school volunteered for the United States Army. During his military tenure he was involved in the Korean Conflict and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Johnie was employed by Union Camp where he retired as a Steelman. He was a member of Savannah Baptist Temple.

Mr. Slater is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Alice Slater; son, Johnie W. Slater, Jr. of Sylvania; daughter, Judy Harrison and husband Spencer of Savannah; a brother; a sister; grandchildren, Heather Whitten, Trey and Erin Slater, John Rhodes and Melissa Lynn Harrison and great grandchild, Amber Whitten.

Visitation: 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

Graveside Funeral Service: 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
