Joseph Snyder Cox

Joseph S. Cox
"Captain Sandy"

Joseph Snyder Cox, 80, local weather personality "Captain Sandy" died Saturday December 6, 2008 at his residence under the care of his family, friends and Hospice Savannah. Joe was born on Friday the 13th of January, 1928, in Frankfort, Kentucky. He was a Meteorologist in the United States Air Force serving in World War II. In subsequent years he was a disc jockey at various radio stations around the country, but he always had a fascination with the weather. In 1965 he settled in Savannah and assumed the roll of "Captain Sandy" the weatherman with WSAV TV. Wearing a nautical cap and windbreaker, and with the help of Wilbur the Weather Bird, Arthurmometer and Calamity Clam, he entertained and informed children and adults alike for more than a decade. Joe was the last person to carry on the tradition of "Captain Sandy". Joe was also a meteorologist for WJCL TV for 5 years. He loved to play golf, sail, ride his bike and spend time with his family.

Joe is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret T. Cox, of Savannah; three daughters, Cindy Cox, of Nyack, NY; Connie Hicks, of Frankfort, KY; and Terry Cox, of Cold Spring, NY. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Hannah and Bekah; and one great-grandson, Aden.

Visitation will be 5:00 to 700 p.m., Monday, December 8, 2008 and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

Memorial service will be 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel with the Rev. John Anderson officiating.

The family requests that remembrances be made to Hospice Savannah Homecare, P.O. Box 13190 Savannah, GA 31416.

Captain Sandy' was such a blessing in our household...I was a child who loved all of the characters on the show..My parents loved his weather reports. He was an uncle to us---a part of our family. His life was such a positive role model for us. I am sadden by his leaving, but this is part of life. We have been truly blessed by him.

My sympathy and prayers to all of Mr. Cox's family. I always looked forward to the weather as a child growing up, that says a lot for his charm and character. I recognized him several years ago walking in the local Mall and it really brought a smile and great memories to see him, bless you all.
