Celebrating the life of
Robert Joseph Groover, Sr.
November 29, 1926 - December 27, 2008
Robert Joseph Groover, 82, passed away on Saturday, December 27, 2008 at his home after an extended illness.
Robert was born in Savannah to the late Henry B. and Margaret Craig Groover. He graduated from Savannah High School where he was Captain of the football team and a member of the 1942 state championship football team. He graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY with a B.S. Degree in Marine Engineering. While there he was on the football team, swimming team and a golden glove boxer. He served with the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II and served as a Lieutenant with the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He retired from CSX Railroad Co.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy Madray Groover; sons, Robert J. Groover, Jr. and David R. Groover; brother, Craig "Bubba" Groover; granddaughters, Kari, Kathryn, Kaitlyn, Caroline, Emilie and Laura Grace Groover. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. One son, Ricky Groover preceded him in death.
Visitation: 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Funeral Service: 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel with burial following at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
