Celebrating the life of
Lloyd Henry
Passed away on January 11, 2009
C. S. Lewis once wrote "with the possible exception of the equator, everything begins somewhere." Lloyd Randolph Henry's beginnings were in Washington, DC where he was born on March 31, 1930 to Conder Caywood Henry and Frances Irene Brown. Lloyd attended public schools in Washington, DC, and he graduated high-school from the all-boys Augusta Military Academy in Fort Defiance, VA in 1948. During the Korean War, Lloyd served in the United States Navy as a medic. After the Korean War, Lloyd graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In 1952, Lloyd married his first wife, Virginia Ritter. Lloyd enjoyed a long career with BASF as a project manager in both Williamsburg, VA and Anderson, SC. After his first wife's passing and in his retirement, Lloyd moved to Savannah, GA. There, he met his second wife Barbara Fisher Bellinger whom he married in 1994. Lloyd and Barbara were members of the Wilmington Island Presbyterian Church. Barbara's gift to Lloyd was travel; together, they traveled throughout Europe and the U.S.
C. S. Lewis also wrote that "what a man does when he is taken off his guard is the best evidence for what sort of man he is." Lloyd was a man who could never be taken off his guard; indeed, Lloyd enjoyed disarming others with his quick wit and practical jokes. Those who knew Lloyd will remember his how his blue eyes would wink and twinkle before he played a joke at their expense. Further, throughout his life, Lloyd kept a strong Christian faith once as an Episcopal and then as a Presbyterian, and he served the church that he loved as a youth leader for several Episcopal churches. Finally, Lloyd loved being on the water in his boat. Family and friends of Lloyd can share in common memories from time spent with Lloyd on his boat.
Lloyd passed on January 10, 2009. Lloyd was preceded in death by his sisters Frances Hackman and Elaine Bobo and his first wife Virginia Ritter Henry. Lloyd is survived by his wife Barbara Fisher Henry; his four children, Elyse Calvin Weeks and children Trey Weeks and AshleyTim Weeks of Savannah, GA, Larry Bobbie Henry of New Zealand and children Ashton, Lauren, Tyler, John, Catherine and Amy; Leslie Thomas Owen of Paola, KS and their children AdairDallas Olson of Spearfish, S.D. and Judith Owen; and Mary Russell Bell and their children Caroline and Kevin of Lexington, SC; Barbara's children Karri Farrow and her daughter Brittany and Lynn Bellinger of Savannah, GA; and one great-grandchild Tim Weeks. His death will also be felt by his beloved cat Skipper a 1992 Christmas gift to him from his daughters when Lloyd moved to Savannah, GA.
Many who knew Lloyd's love for the water will find comfort in the last stanza of Matthew Arnold's poem, "The Future." In this excerpt, Arnold describes a sailor who has reached the end of the River of Time:
"And the width of the waters, the hush
Of the grey expanse where he floats in his boat,
Freshening its current and spotted with foam
As it draws to the Ocean, may strike
Peace to the soul of the man on its breast -
As the pale waste widens around him,
As the banks fade dimmer away,
As the stars come out, and the night-wind
Brings up the stream
Murmurs and scents of the infinite sea."
Visitation will be held at 6:00 - 8:00 PM on Wednesday January 14 at Fox and Weeks Island Chapel. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 15 at 2:00 at Wilmington Island Presbyterian Church. Private family interment.
