Jewel Harrison

Jewel Harrison
Frances Jewel Harrison born September 3, 1917 and died January 19, 2009.
Daughter, sister, mother, friend and known to most as Nana. You did not have to be her grandchild or great grand to know her as Nana. She just was. She grew up on Habersham Street when Victory Drive was a dirt road and women sold vegetables in baskets on their heads as they passed by her home. She told stories of her life in old Savannah: of her mom voting in the first election allowing women to vote and going to the big pavilion down at Tybee. Nana enjoyed painting and painted only her favorite images of the South that made her happy: shrimp boats, big magnolia blossoms, coastlines, and day lilies covered her walls and those of her family and friends. She was a graduate of Commercial High and a woman in the work force, retiring from Georgia Ports Authority. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church, the Faith Sunday School Class, WMU, a charter member of the Savannah Art Guild, the Presbyterian Bible Study and volunteered many years at the Savannah Baptist Center. Her most precious gift in life was her family and those she loved. Whether she knew you or not, her main focus in life was where did you go to church? You did not have to go to her church, but you did need to be going. For those of us fortunate to be blessed with our lives touching hers, she left us with a precious pearl of wisdom, and a resource for life, the love of God. For all her decisions in life, both those that were good and some that could have been better, and for all of the decisions we will make through our lives, good and some that we could do better, we thank her for her life, her love, and for seeing her faith in God.
She left behind two daughters Mary Beckworth and Cecelia Smith, one brother Lawrence Harley, four grandchildren: Kelly Lammons, Barry Smith, Jill Beckworth, Kim Serface and eight great-grandchildren.
We are very thankful for all the hard work and support of Spanish Oaks Hospice. Thank you for being there every step of the way.
Visitation: 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at the Islands Chapel of Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors.
Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m., Thursday at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.
Burial: Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
