SAVANNAH – Galen Chapman Evans, 78, passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer. Galen was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Otis Chapman of Cedarhurst, NY. She attended The Madeira School and Vassar College.
She relocated to Winnetka, IL in 1960 and to Savannah, GA in 1993. Galen was passionate and talented about gardening, flower arranging, and interior design. She was principal of her own design firm, Martin & Wilsey. She served on the Flower Guild at both Christ Church, Winnetka, and St. Peter's Church, Savannah; and was active in garden clubs in both communities.
She is survived by her loving husband, J. Stuart Evans, who shared many of her artistic interests; her daughter, Virginia M. Cartwright and son-in-law, Phillip Cartwright, of Paris, France; her daughter, Elizabeth M. Sanders and son-in-law, Steven Sanders, of Northbrook, IL; her daughter, Galen M. Mott and son-in-law, Theodore Tod of South Berwick, ME; her son, C. Robert Bob Martin, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Whitney, of Northbrook, IL. She also is survived by her step-daughters, Jessie Swezey and her husband, Robert of Northbrook, IL and Ellen Evans of Denver, CO. She is also survived by her seven loving grandchildren and two step-grandchildren: Mollie and Lisa Sanders; Leigh and Woody Mott; Kendall, Nell and Charlie Martin; and Megan and Sarah Swezey.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church on Skidaway Island.
