Algerine "Tangerine" Helton

Algerine "Tangerine" Helton, 85, died Wednesday, February 04, 2009 at Bryan County Nursing Home in Richmond Hill.
Mr. Helton was born in Emanuel County on February 26, 1923, the son of the late Lawson and Emily Williams Helton. He served during World War II in the 8th Air Force. Tangerine moved to Savannah in 1948 and started selling insurance with Independent Life Insurance Co., becoming Insurance Salesman of the Year in 1949. His talent and overwhelming personality helped him become well known in the used car industry, ultimately starting Helton Motor Co. in the 1950's, a prominent used car business which still exists at the corner of 37th and Montgomery Streets. He was a member of the Georgia Independent Dealers Association, Acacia Lodge #454, F.&A.M. and a longtime member of Wildwood United Methodist Church.
Mr. Helton is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mildred Helton; sons, Jerry Helton and wife Brenda of Richmond Hill, Hugh Helton and wife Judy of Savannah; grandson, Allen Helton of Savannah and brother, Lewis K. Helton and wife Sara of Easley, SC.
Funeral Service: 12:00 p.m. Friday, February 6, 2009 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens with Masonic Rites.
The family would like to give a special thanks to all the staff at Hospice Savannah and Bryan County Health and Rehab for all the care they gave to Mr. Helton during his illness.
