Dear Kane Family, I am writing to express my regrets for your loss and to state with great certainty that Mr. Kane lives on as a result of his deeds and the family that he nurtured. I am sorry that I did not know Mr. Kane. In fact, I do not know the family beyond a brief conversation that I have with Andrew in Starbucks last Thursday. I was working at my computer while enjoying coffee when I became an unintentional interloper. We were in close proximity to each other and there was virtually no way for me to ignore the conversation when I overheard Andrew discussing something about death and his need for a dark suit. When Andrew got off the phone, we talked about how amazing his father was and about all that he contributed to the community. I was quick to apologize for listening in on the conversation and explained that I tend to be overly empathetic. Nonetheless, I was most touched by the palpable pain that emanated from Andrew and was heartened to find that when he talked about his father and showed me his father’s picture, he was full of pride and aware of life’s natural course. I expressed to Andrew that I felt that Mr. Kane’s community service activities were remarkable and that I am sure that he improved the lives of the children at the Bethesda Home for Boys. Just knowing that someone else cares about you can make a huge impact. Mr. Kane’s impact goes far beyond his own direct contributions. I am certain that Andrew and the rest you in his family continue to have a positive influence on the world and although I may never make direct contact with Andrew or any other family members in the future, it is encouraging to know that you are there doing some good. Good luck with healing, preserving those memories, and continuing his legacy. Sincerely, Katheryn McGuthry
