Carol Anne Richardson
SAVANNAH - Carol Anne Richardson, 61, died March 18, 2009, at Hospice Savannah, following a courageous five year battle with cancer. Born May 2, 1947, in Orangeburg, SC, she was the daughter of Harry Eugene Quattlebaum and the late Anne Webb Quattlebaum. She grew up in Columbia, SC, graduated from the University of South Carolina, and met her husband while both were students in the School of Church Music at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. They married in 1970 and moved to Savannah in 1971.
For over thirty years Carol Anne taught elementary music at Calvary Day School, passing her love for music on to hundreds of students. All that time she shared her musical gifts with the congregation of First Baptist Church, where she was an active member from 1971 until her death. She sang in the choir, played piano, rang handbells, and was an alto soloist. In past years she directed the children's choir, accompanied the youth choir, and directed the handbell choir.
In addition to her musical roles at First Baptist Church, she served three terms on the active diaconate, served on or chaired many church committees, and was a faithful member of the Peggy Murphy Sunday School Class. Through the years she composed or arranged many musical selections for the church's choirs, and wrote hymn texts for a number of special occasions. In later years she took up other creative arts, representatives of which can be seen throughout the church's buildings. These include a painting and the bicentennial banner, which she designed and created.
In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband of thirty-nine years, Rev. James C. Richardson; son and daughter-in-law Marc Richardson and Carolyn Pruden Richardson; daughter and son-in-law Emily Richardson-Dion and Keith Dion; and granddaughter Jacqueline Haynes Dion, born February 20, 2009. Other survivors include sister and brother-in-law Harriet Q. Pritchard and Randy Pritchard; brother Gene Quattlebaum and partner Joe Stickney; nephews and nieces Austin and Dawn Pritchard, Alan and Caroline Creaser Pritchard, Valerie P. and Jamie Creaghan; and great nephews Ben Creaghan and Sam Creaghan. Survivors in the Richardson family are brothers and sisters-in-law Bob and Sandra Richardson and Paul and Susan Richardson, nephew Robert Richardson, and niece Rachel Richardson.
Visitation will be at the Richardson home from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 20.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, 223 Bull Street, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, with Dr. John Finley and Rev. Richard Ferrell presiding.
Remembrances: First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 9551, Savannah, GA 31412, or Hospice Savannah, P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416.
Carol Ann was such a warm person and a good friend. I am sorry not to have taken the opportunity sooner to express how sad I am that she has passed away. My sincere condolences to you James, Emily, Mark, Peepa, Gene and all the family. You know that Carol Anne touched the heart of someone 'the other side of the pond' I shall miss having her in my life, but gratefull that she was there for a short time, and because of her, I experienced the warmth of James and the Family. I am sad for your loss. Jean

Dear Mr. Richardson, Marc, Carolyn, and Emily: I wanted you to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. I was certainly one of the many beneficiaries of Carol Anne's love of music, and my life has most definitely been enriched by the passion for music that she passed along to so many people...I am thankful to have known her, and will be praying for you. Mrs. Richardson was my son, Alex's, favorite. He really missed her at Calvary this year. He just told me that Mrs. Richardson had gone home to Jesus. We cried together as we thought of her love for music and the way she shared it with each of her students. I imagine there is quite a chorus going on in heaven right now. Thank you for sharing her with our children - what a blessing she was. She definitely left an imprint on Alex's life and I'm sure so many more.

Dear James, Marc, Emily and family, We were truly saddened to hear about Carol Anne's passing. She was such a special person--talented in so many ways. I enjoyed singing with her at First Baptist. It was such a privilege to sing the duet, 'I Waited for the Lord,' with her. It was one of the high points in my choir life. I know I will sing with Carol Anne again--someday in the 'heavenly choir.' She will probably be leading sectional rehearsals, working with the handbells and writing texts for Mozart's or Handel's latest work--she was so talented. We will be praying that God will be with you, comfort you and give you peace. Joe and Linda Smith
