Celebrating the life of
Nicholas C. Paleologos
August 02, 1938 - March 31, 2009
Nicholas C. Paleologos
SAVANNAH – Nicholas C. Paleologos also known as Nicholas or Nickie Nichols during the first 18 years of his life died Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at his home following an extended fight against cancer. His home was in The Landings, Savannah, Georgia.
He was born August 2, 1938 in Charles Town, West Virginia the son of the late Christos and Stella Paleologos, both born in Mytelini, Greece. He grew up in Charles Town, moving as a youngster to Frederick, Maryland where he graduated from Frederick High School then the University of Maryland with an electrical engineering degree and as captain of the varsity swimming team. Following school, he joined the Navy where he served for 20 years mostly at sea and in the Pacific. His last tour was as commanding officer of a destroyer stationed out of Pearl Harbor.
Following the Navy, Nick and his family remained in Hawaii for one and one half years before moving to Atlanta, Georgia. There he had a second career in the nuclear electric generation industry at the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations travelling the U.S. and world wide. He worked on loan at nuclear power plants for Texas Utilities and Niagara Mohawk helping to manage their operations. He retired and bought his Savannah home the last day of the last century as he would tell those who asked. Likewise, he often wondered during a conversation, how in the world there was ever time to work. Among many other activities, he loved to travel and was active in tennis and later in golf.
Surviving are his children, Timon Paleologos and his wife Tracy and sons Calen and Kyle of Auburn, Alabama; Melinda Matulich and her husband Bret and son Jadyn of Aromos, California; and sister Maria Manolatos and her husband Dean of Brookeville, Maryland.
Memorial Service will be private for the family with the body cremated and the ashes spread to the sea.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of a contribution to the Anne and Bill Toddie Oncology Research Fund, St. Joseph's-Candler Foundations, 5353 Reynolds St., Savannah, GA 31405.
What a privelege it was to have known Nick! We certainly will miss him. We will keep him in our memory and look forward to maintaining our connection with you, his family. May your memories bring you comfort at this difficult time and in the years ahead.
- Marla & Morris Geffen, Savannah, GA
I worked with Nick for many years at INPO. My wife Sarah Belle and I had a good visit with him on January 25 at Skidaway. Nick was the same as always except maybe a bit mellower. He had just played golf the day before and was installing a new sink in his kitchen. We talked about old times at work, his parents, his friend Joan, and his children, whom he loved dearly. Nick faced his health issues with courage and candor, just as he would face any other problem. I have rarely met a man who held himself and others to such high standards. It rubbed off on all of us who were fortunate enough to know and work with Nick. May God bless him and his family. I'm sure we'll be with him again some day.
- Fred Tollison, Marietta, GA
Nick Paleologos, Friend and co-worker extraordinarie. Nick and I worked together at INPO for many years. He kept me on my toes. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Nick and will miss him.
- Ken Strahm, Indialantic, FL
I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Nick after almost 10 years after we retired...we worked together for about 20 years at INPO.. I am really glad I had that opportunity to speak with him. He brought back many fond memories of working, traveling and playing tennis together. Nick was great about taking his personal time to give you advice in a kind way if he thought it would help you with no apparent benefit to himself. He even gave me some advice about cancer testing this time as well. God bless him for that beautiful characteristic...my condolences and prayers are sent to his family and friends. May he rest in peace for a job well done in this life.
- Don Gillispie, Eagle, ID
Like many others here, I had the pleasure of working with and directly for Nick at INPO. Nick taught me one of my most memorable leadership lessons, pointing out how a boneheaded assumption I'd made led to poor results. I have shared that poignant lesson with many over the years, always making sure I emphasized the way Nick 'coached' me, which was more important than the lesson itself. Nick was a great role model and I miss him, but not his dreaded red pen. My condolences to the Paleologos family and may he rest in eternal peace.
- Mark Peifer, Fort Wayne, IN
