Nina Boumansour Minchew

Nina Boumansour Minchew

Nina Boumansour Minchew passed away in her home on Skidaway Island, Savannah GA on Friday April 3. Her husband Hal was with her. She died of health complications associated with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder COPD. Throughout her life she also struggled with issues resulting from polio which she had in her youth.

Nina was born in Lebanon after her parents Mike and Wadad Saad Boumansour had travelled from their home in Malone NY so that Nina could be born in their native country. When Nina was six months old, the family returned to their home in Malone. Nina became a United States Citizen when she was 12 years old.

Nina loved a good conversation and could hold forth in several languages including French, Spanish, English and Arabic.

Nina is a graduate of Franklin Academy High School in Malone NY and holds a Bachelor of Arts, English from St. Lawrence University in Canton NY. Nina was an active member of Kappa Delta Sorority at St. Lawrence.

After college graduation, Nina moved to Key West FL to teach school. It was there that she and Hal Minchew met and courted. Nina went on to teach High School English in several states and schools supporting Hal's corporate relocations.

While living in Toledo OH, Nina became a popular and regular fixture at Ottawa Hills High School. Nina loved being with young people at the high school and knew every student there by name. Nina served there in the capacity of substitute teacher to many and unofficial life counselor to some.

Nina also became very active in politics by organizing and running a very large phone bank in support of the Ronald Reagan presidential campaign. This experience ignited a strong interest in the political process and Nina went on to attend a crash course in Washington DC on political campaign management. Following that, she ran political campaigns, including Dave Karmol's run for Ohio State Assembly. Nina was also appointed Executive Director of the Lucas County Republican Party in 1983.

In addition to Nina's deep interest in politics, she loved to play duplicate bridge, read books, fish and watch movies. Nina had a tremendous knowledge of American Film, having been raised in an apartment above the Cinema Plaza, the movie theater in Malone NY which was owned and operated by her parents Mike and Wadad Boumansour.

Nina will be dearly missed by her survivors' including her husband of 51 years, Harold R Minchew of Savannah GA, son Scott Minchew and his girlfriend Isa Lopez of Miami FL, daughter Lindy Shallcross of Atlanta GA, and daughter Michele Minchew, son in law John Rice and grandchildren Nina and Walker Rice of Marietta GA.

Visitation is scheduled for Weds, April 8th from 5-7pm at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, 7200 Hodgson Memorial Dr. Savannah, GA 31406. A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday April 9th, 11am at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 3 Westridge Rd Savannah, GA 31411.
