April 19, 1921 - April 21, 2009

Ida Elizabeth Fletcher McCray

Savannah, Georgia

Ida Elizabeth Fletcher McCray passed away Tuesday morning April 21, 2009, two days after her 88th birthday.

Born in Kittery Point, Maine on April 19, 1921 to the late Arthur Orville Fletcher and Nellie Julia Sawyer Fletcher. She was one of ten children.

Growing up in the small coastal village of Kittery Point, Ida Elizabeth was an active member of the First Baptist Church there, and graduated from Traip Academy. Ida loved Maine and her family home on Foyes Lane Hill. She was a skilled and beautiful ice skater, and had many fond memories and stories of skating on Derring's Pond with bonfires providing warmth. As a young woman she had a lovely voice, pretty blue eyes, and peaches and cream complexion. She liked to sing and dance, and had a natural talent for drawing. She met and later married Elmo McCray "Alabam" who was stationed at the Portsmouth Naval Base during WWII, at a street dance in Portsmouth.

Ida was a proud, loving mother and friend with a kind and gentle spirit. As a homemaker she liked to try new recipes, was a talented seamstress, and was an avid square dancer, belonging to several square dance clubs in the Savannah area. Her creative flower arrangements won numerous ribbons at the Coastal Georgia Empire Fair. She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her five devoted children, Carol Frances McCray Davies of Savannah, Sherry Michael McCray Kern and son-in-law John Stanley Kern of Savannah, Elmo Marcus McCray III of Spokane, WA, Arie Elizabeth McCray Hogan and son-in-law Michael Jerome Jerry Hogan of Savannah, and Bruce Fletcher McCray and daughter-in-law Pamela Burnett-McCray of Richmond Hill. She is also survived by her former husband Elmo Marcus McCray, Jr. of Savannah.

She is survived by nine beloved grandchildren, Riley Elizabeth McCray, Christopher Ian Davies, Adam Jonathon Davies, Britt Thomas Georges and wife Kim, Stephen Campbell McCray and wife Renee, Chad Marcus McCray, Sean Robert McCray, Joshua Andrew McCray, Joshua Martin Burnett, and one great-grandson Ryan Christopher Davies.

Surviving are her sisters Frances Arlene Chapman of Scotia, New York, Constance Connie Helen Calendar of Sarasota, Florida, Dorothy Phyllis Dot Chick of Portsmouth NH and brother-in-law John Chick, and brothers Arthur Orville Junior Fletcher and sister-in-law Janice of Kittery, Maine, Alvin Richard Fletcher and sister-in-law Jean of Kittery Point, Maine, and a host of cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her sisters Louise June Fletcher and infant sister Judith Allen Fletcher, and brothers Warren Phillip Fletcher and Frederick Ernest Fletcher of Kittery Point, Maine.
Remembrances of flowers are graciously welcomed, or if desired, donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
