Metin R. Hamarat

SAVANNAH, GA, USA – Metin R. Hamarat, of Savannah, GA, died June 3, 2009. Metin was born on April 1, 1918, and was raised in Istanbul, Turkey. He received his BS degree at Robert College, Istanbul, in 1937 and his Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1942.

Metin joined Union Camp then Union Bag in 1942, in Savannah, as an engineer draftsman. In 1945, Metin resigned and returned to Turkey to join the family textile business until he could join the Turkish Army during World War II, where he became an officer and worked with the American Forces as a translator.

After the war, Metin returned to Savannah and rejoined Union Camp as Group Leader in Industrial Engineering. In 1953, Metin was promoted to Union Camp's Manager of Box Factories. He was promoted again to General Manufacturing Manager in 1962, relocating to the New York City headquarters. Additional promotions sent Metin to Monroe, MI, as Central Regional General Manager in 1966, and to Allied Container in Massachusetts in 1969. He was named Executive Vice President in 1978, transferred back to his beloved Savannah in 1985, and retired to live at The Landings on Skidaway Island in 1986.

Metin was considered "Le Fabulous Boss" by all who worked for him. His continuous rise within the company over his 40-year career was an acknowledgement of his outstanding capabilities and decision-making acumen. Those who worked with him remember fondly many of his motivational quotes and humorous stories.
Metin was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He and his wife Sema enjoyed travelling throughout the United States, particularly to Las Vegas and to visit with family. They frequently returned to Turkey to visit with extended family and friends. Their home was always open to visiting friends and family.

Metin is survived by his devoted wife Sema Hamarat, a noted dress designer and artist, and their two children Deniz Hamarat Johnson John and Errol Hamarat and by four grandchildren, Aydin, Max, Devran, and Karli Johnson.

Metin was preceded in death by his mother and father, Nedim and Didar Hamarat and his two brothers Vacit and Nahit Hamarat who worked with their father in the family's textile business in Istanbul. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Maria D'urruthy y Odio, the mother of their two surviving sons Nedim Hamarat Sharon and Kerim Hamarat, and Kerim's son Miguel Patricia and granddaughter Breanna.

There will be a memorial service in Metin's honor at the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, 54 Diamond Causeway, Savannah, GA, on June 19, 2009, at 11:00 A.M.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Pine Woods Retreat, 1149 Cornell Ave., Suite 3-A, Savannah, GA 31406.
