Celebrating the life of
Dorothy Louise McElveen Hinely
May 06, 1924 - July 03, 2009
- Savannah - Dorothy Louise McElveen Hinely was born on May 6, 1924, in Winston Salem, NC. She passed away on July 3, 2009, at home surrounded by the family, who love her dearly.
She was known as Louise to her parents Moses Judson McElveen and Sarah Louise Wilson McElveen. After she married the love of her life, Roy C. Hinely, Jr., she was known as Dot. To her children she was Mother, Mama, Ma and Mom. To her grandchildren she is Grandmama or Grandmother. To her great-grandchildren, she is Granny Dot, D-Dot, and Grand Dot.
She and Roy married during World War II, and like so many other young married people in that time, they were apart for 2 years. When he got home, they settled in at White Bluff to raise a family. Four children made their family complete.
She is survived by a large family: Her three children: Royann Harley Larry, Ron Hinely, and Pam Goodrum Ashley. Her daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Donald Love, predeceased her.
Her grandchildren and their families: Ty Harley Jennifer, Lonnie Harley Tina, Dana Harley Mara, Clay Hinely Maude, Josh Hinely Caroline, Del Love Stephanie, Cleve Love Tara, Heather Langford Tommy and A. J.Goodrum Katie. She was so proud of each one. From these most loved grandchildren, she has been blest with 16 great-grandchildren. She wondered for a long time if she would become a great-grandmother! The kids did not disappoint her and we are thankful that she lived to rejoice in the births of each one and watch them grow.
Her sisters: Anne Milton Inman, Margie Robbins Weldon, Sandra Polk Philip and Janice McElveen. Her sister, Bobbie Harrison, predeceased her. Brothers: Judson McElveen Betty and Jim McElveen Aggie.Brother-in-law, Jack Harrison Sue.
Her extended family includes many nephews, nieces, and cousins. Large families are such a gift from God. We are so blessed to be in this one.
Dot's life has been so important in the lives of so many. Once she was sure that her children could stand on their own, she went to work as school secretary for White Bluff Elementary School. She was a long time volunteer at the Ronald McDonald house. She was active in her church, White Bluff Presbyterian.
She will be loved and remembered until we are each called Home in our own time. We will make sure that our little ones will continue to know this wonderful lady, who loved them. We love you, Mom.
Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at White Bluff Presbyterian Church with Reverend Eric M. Beene officiating. A reception will be held immediately following the service in the church social hall for all guests.
Burial will be private.
Remembrances: In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Dot's memory to Hospice Savannah, Inc., P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416 or White Bluff Presbyterian Church, 10710 White Bluff Rd., Savannah, GA 31419.

Dear all, I have only been an 'in-law' to this wonderful family for five years, after my daughter married A.J., one of the grandsons. What a pleasure it has been to be welcomed to this family! We have so much fun when we are all together, I think I am part of the family. Granny Dot was the sweetest lady to all of us and my heart breaks at her passing. I have learned so much by my faith, though. I know that faith in God will sustain me through any pain, and I know she is with Jesus and her family members she lost long ago and is without any pain. What a blessed miracle that is! She has many grandchildren and great-grancdhildren who will carry out her legacy of having an open door and open heart to all who would like to come in. Thanks, Granny Dot, for sharing yourself with all of us for these many years. We will try to measure up to you, but it won't be easy. Blessings and peace to you all, Christy Quinn
