Celebrating the life of

Emmett Garrison Nesbit

May 17, 1929 - August 07, 2009

Emmett Garrison Nesbit

Emmett Garrison Nesbit passed away August 7, 2009, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Savannah, after a long illness. He was born May 17, 1929 in Monroe, NC, spending his childhood there and in Norfolk, VA. While attending the University of North Carolina, he met and married Florence Kerves of Savannah. He enlisted in the U. S. Army and served during the Korean War as a weapons instructor in Havre de Grace, MD. Following an honorable discharge, he and his wife returned to the University of North Carolina, where he was graduated in 1957. They then moved to Savannah, where they resided for the remainder of his life.

After an initial career as a banker and stockbroker, Mr. Nesbit changed professions and became a teacher, working primarily at Johnson High School and Bartlett Middle School. He retired from the Savannah-Chatham Public School System in 1989. During and after his time as a teacher, he managed several concessions operations in Savannah, including concessions at the Savannah Braves, the Savannah Cardinals, the Savannah Civic Center, Armstrong Atlantic State University, the City of Savannah Summer Lunch Program, and, for over 26 years, concessions at AMBUCS Park.

Mr. Nesbit was a caring, understanding and thoughtful man. Above all, he was a man devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Florence; his daughter Pamela C. Nesbit-Ferris, her husband Dr. Charles Ferris and their children, Walker and Garrison; and his son, Emmett G. Nesbit, Jr., his wife Lori and their children, Danielle, Alexander and Elizabeth.

The family will hold a memorial service at St. John's Church on Saturday, August 15, 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. John's Church, the Wounded Warrior Project, or the Savannah chapter of AMBUCS are suggested.
