Dr. Frank Benedict Hubby
March 28, 1939 - January 17, 2019
Dr. Hubby was unique, eccentric, and mission-driven. A doctor, a father, a writer, an inspiration, and a generous spirit who will be truly missed.
SAVANNAH – Frank Benedict Hubby, M.D., 79, of Savannah, Georgia, passed away on Thursday January 17, 2019.
He was born in New York City to Kingsley K. and Frank W. Hubby, III, and spent his childhood in Princeton, NJ. He graduated from Trinity College, and received his medical degree from The University of Virginia. After his residency in Pediatric and Family Medicine at Bellevue Hospital in New York, he pursued a life in which his medical knowledge and deep passion for helping others could be realized. This journey took him to Nigeria, Colorado, England, and Mississippi, before he found his home in Savannah, Georgia.
Ben dedicated his life to serving those in need. He set up his practice on the corner of Hall and Habersham and opened his doors to the community, whether his patients could pay for their care or not. He was one of the first physicians in Savannah to help face the ravages of the AIDS epidemic, he never passed a fire or an accident without stopping to offer help, no matter what time or where he was going. He did house calls in every part of the city for those who could not come to him. He was the kind of doctor who cared for the whole person rather than simply curing their illnesses. He brought inspirational movies and music to patients who might be moved by their messages, he invited the homeless to join for meals, he helped Vietnamese families find new homes in America in the years after the War, and his deep passion for his city eventually led him to run for Mayor.
Outside of the office, he could be found reading The New York Times over breakfast at Clary’s Drug Store, on the tennis courts of Forsyth Park, jogging around Lake Mayer, or waiting for the tides to release him from the many sandbars that he encountered while sailing the TinaBolyn (named for his daughters). He’d be browsing the books at Shaver’s or Barnes & Noble, editing his projects over a bowl of soup at the Atlantic Bread Company with his trusty yellow legal pad, discussing politics at Starbucks, and was always looking for ways to bring laughter and surprise to those around him.
His sense of humor will be remembered by all who knew him. He was unique, eccentric, and mission-driven. A doctor, a father, a writer, an inspiration, and a generous spirit who will be truly missed.
He is survived by his sister Alison Hoversten of Denver, CO, his former wife and the mother of his daughters, Barbara Gillespie of San Francisco, CA, his daughters Bettina and Bolyn Hubby of Los Angeles and San Francisco, CA, his granddaughter, Savannah K. Smith, and his amazing community at Buckingham South where he was loved and cared for over the last several years. A remembrance and celebration of his life is being planned and will be announced on foxandweeks.com. This man was surely a delight I cannot put into words. Every morning he would come to Altanta Bread Company and order oatmeal with the "crinkies" on top and read. He would make it a point to brighten up my day with a joke, a story, or some newfound information. Dr. Hubby is so missed and my condolences deeply to all who loved him. Surely he is missed and I am so saddened to hear of his passing.?????? I wish I had more moments with this man. He was everybody's friend. Bettina your dad was a wonderful deeply caring unselfish human being he called me to a hotel at hogson memorial to studio suite .he was lying unable to get up I helped him sit up helped him dress and called and ambulance he hinted to me a neurological problem .he was very kind to me a total stranger to a Trinidad native arriving in Savannah in1976.h frequently boasted of his 2 dauhhters.although divorced I sensed he still loved barbara.was out of town when he died and was deeply saddened I used to see him in lake meyer I will miss him for his uniqueness and as genuine friend and colleague.may the lord have mercy on him and grant him eternal rest

I was just speaking with my mom, and Dr. Hubby’s name came up. The last conversation I had with Dr. Hubby was in 2007, when he advised me of which anti-malaria pills I should take prior to my working West Africa. Dr. Hubby cared for my brother and me since we were infants, and he cared for my grandfather (William Battiste) until his 90s. I share your grief but celebrate the wonderful things he’s done and accomplished.

Doctor Hubby was my doctor and wonderful friend. He was interested in everything and noticed everything. Never a dull moment around him. So many stories of his caring - sitting by my friend in pain and coming to her house on Sunday. Recollections of years of his medical care of myself and my children and feeling that everything would be all right. And it was. He was also a sensitive writer and I still remember his columns. As my youngest daughter who was the age of his daughter said (after a day's outing with his daughters in his care at age 5) - "we did it all, we had a hamburger, skated, went to the movies, bowled and ended up swinging real high on the swings!" I will miss him so much.

I did not have the pleasure of being Dr. Hubby's patient, but I worked with him and he was one of the nicest people I've met. When I was dire straits as a RN at a hospital in Savannah, he was the only doctor who told me, "what they're doing to you is horrible." It upset him that I was being abused and nearly destroyed. He was the only doctor who wanted to help me. Dr. Hubby was wonderful to work with and he had morals and ethics. Right - v- wrong. I will truly miss Dr. Hubby.

I am so sorry to learn that this wonderful human being has passed away. I first consulted Dr.Hubby in 1979 when I developed Type I diabetes at the age of 26. I was hospitalized for 4 days while I learned how to give myself insulin injections. After I went home Dr. Hubby gave me his home telephone number and insisted that I call him every morning at 5:30 so that we could discuss my insulin dosage for the day. He did this for several weeks, until I felt confident enough to manage my illness on my own. I don’t know of any other physician who would be concerned enough about a patient to offer assistance like that. I will always remember his care and compassion. What a wonderful man! My condolences to his loved ones.

It made me feel so sad to hear that Dr. Hubby had left us. How many doctors can you call out of the blue and have them talk with you, just because you need to hear a familiar, comforting voice? I moved from Savannah in 1990, but missed my doctor, “Gentle Ben”.We talked for a bit and I felt better afterwards. He had that power to go straight to the main concern and address it. I am so happy he enjoyed life-he certainly did all he could to help others do that very thing. He will be missed by so many.

I did not have the pleasure of being Dr. Hubby's patient, but I worked with him and he was one of the nicest people I've met. When I was dire straits as a RN at a hospital in Savannah, he was the only doctor who told me, "what they're doing to you is horrible." It upset him that I was being abused and nearly destroyed. He was the only doctor who wanted to help me. Dr. Hubby was wonderful to work with and he had morals and ethics. Right - v- wrong. I will truly miss Dr. Hubby.

I am so sorry to learn that this wonderful human being has passed away. I first consulted Dr.Hubby in 1979 when I developed Type I diabetes at the age of 26. I was hospitalized for 4 days while I learned how to give myself insulin injections. After I went home Dr. Hubby gave me his home telephone number and insisted that I call him every morning at 5:30 so that we could discuss my insulin dosage for the day. He did this for several weeks, until I felt confident enough to manage my illness on my own. I don’t know of any other physician who would be concerned enough about a patient to offer assistance like that. I will always remember his care and compassion. What a wonderful man! My condolences to his loved ones.

It made me feel so sad to hear that Dr. Hubby had left us. How many doctors can you call out of the blue and have them talk with you, just because you need to hear a familiar, comforting voice? I moved from Savannah in 1990, but missed my doctor, “Gentle Ben”.We talked for a bit and I felt better afterwards. He had that power to go straight to the main concern and address it. I am so happy he enjoyed life-he certainly did all he could to help others do that very thing. He will be missed by so many.

After my father-in-law, Dr. George Straight, passed away in 1980, my family began going to his "next door neighbor on Hall Street." In our case going to the doctor was always an adventure and a lot of laughs. Dr. Hubby was always interested in our family, asking many questions and always full of information and interesting and funny comments on everything. I will always remember him fondly and miss his "take on life." His medical attention was a comfort. My prayers are with all of you.

Dr. Hubby was my doctor from 1981, when I moved to Savannah, until he had to close his practice. He always took whatever time was needed to see to your needs. He always had a story to share to try to cheer you. He had the best staff to work with him and were just as dedicated. He was one of a kind in this day in age of "take a number".
