Henry Francis Ambos, Jr.

Savannah- Henry F. Ambos Jr., 70, born in Savannah, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 after fiercely fighting a long battle against cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry F. Ambos Sr., Lena Semken Ambos and sister, Lillie Ambos Johnson.

He was a graduate of Savannah High School and played first trumpet in the Savannah High School band. He served in the Georgia Air National Guard.

A leader in the seafood industry for over 40 years, he began at an early age working for his father's seafood company Trade Winds. He later formed Ambos Seafood, Inc. with his twin brother, Louis G Ambos, II. A cornerstone in the Thunderbolt seafood industry he was affectionately known as "Captain Henry."

He was married to his high school sweetheart, Rosemary DeShocka Ambos, for 49 years. He was a loving and devoted husband and father. Henry was a strong, quiet man who put the needs of his family and others before himself.

He was an avid gardener and greatly enjoyed working on his lawn. He liked spending time with his neighbors and talking about gardening techniques. He was a music aficionado and loved big band, jazz and easy listening music.

He was a communicate of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church on Wilmington Island and a past supporter of the Annual Seafood Suppers of Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church in Thunderbolt.

He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Rosemary De Shocka Ambos; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Victoria Ambos, Lexington, S.C. and David and Julie Ambos, Key West, FL; twin brother, Louis G. Ambos, II Suzanne, Savannah, GA; sister, Lena A. Meeks Freddy, Savannah, GA; step-mother, Mildred C. Ambos, Savannah, GA; half-brother, George A. Ambos, Tampa, FL; step-sister, Joy H. Cargill, Hilton Head Island, S.C; step-sister, Janet H. Blackstone, Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, Mary Grace, Mathew Lexington, S.C and Jackson Key West, FL one niece and numerous nephews and cousins.

Visitation: 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Friday, August 21, 2009 with a Christian Wake Service at 6:30 p.m. at the Islands Chapel of Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors.

Mass of Christian Burial: 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 22, 2009 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church. Pallbearers will be, Charles H. Ambos, David F. Ambos, Louis G. Ambos, III, Harold C. Ambos, Andrew C. Ambos and Matthew D. Meeks.

Burial: Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
