Commander William Walker Wright, Sr.
Commander William Walker Wright, Sr., 83, died Friday, November 27, 2009 in Savannah.
He was a resident of Charleston, South Carolina and recently moved to Savannah. He was born in Murphysboro, Illinois on March 19, 1926. During WWII he fought in Europe with the United States Army. Upon his return home he entered the United States Naval Academy where he graduated Class of 1949 with a BS degree. He also earned a degree in electrical engineering from the United States Naval Postgraduate School and a Master in Business Administration from Southern Illinois University. When he retired from the United States Navy, he had given 28 years of armed forces service to our country spanning WWII, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He worked as an engineer at the Medical University of South Carolina, The Citadel and AVCO. Bill was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Charleston and was a master gardener.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan W. Hussey.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 56 years, Lois McKeithen Wright; one son, William Walker Wright, Jr. and his wife, Martha, of Savannah; one sister, Iva Lou Polley, of Illinois, and four grandchildren, Megan A. Hussey, Patrick M. Hussey, Elizabeth R. Wright, and William Walker Wright, III all of Savannah.
Visitation: 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Graveside Service: 2:30 p.m., Thursday, December 3, 2009 at Beaufort National Cemetery with full military honors.
A Memorial Service at Bethel United Methodist Church, Pitt St., Charleston, SC, will be announced at a later date.
