GUEST BOOK

Uncle Charlie was the best Uncle I ever had. He was a kind and patient man with a constant story. He was the salt of the earth. I love him for what he was and how he treated people. He was honest and caring. He always treated me like I mattered, like I wasn't just a kid in the room. He had a special light in his spirit and he tried to share that spirit with everyone he came across. He will be eternally missed by me. I wish I had been able to be with him for more of my life.

Please forgive me for intruding upon your grief, but my father was Joe Hearne born Joseph Hearn whose parents left him with his aunt Mary Mehrtens Jenkins to raise. Daddy and his parents were born in Savannah, as was I and my sisters. Is there any chance we're related? Daddy's parents had more children after they moved to New Jersey, but I never met them. Please accept my condolences on your loss. Mr. Hearn must have been a wonderful man. I know you must miss him terribly. My father died in 1977.

- Janet Hearne, Johnson City, TN

Charlie was a very special man and veteran. He was always the little man that was always there and you could count on to rally the troops. He epitomized America's 'greatest generation', he was vocal in all things dealing with the veterans and was always supportive of all veterans organizations. Seeing Charlie there at all the events I attended with the veterans always put a smile on my face. I knew the day was going to be good, he always had a smile on his face. He loved interacting with the kids and making sure that our great nation never forgot what he and his generation did for all of us. I am for one eternally greatful for his service and sacrifice for my freedom. Charlie will be sorely missed by myself and all the members of the U.S. 3rd Division Living History Company. He is a prime reason we do what we do everyday.. keeping memories such as Charlies, alive for the world to always remember. Very Respectfully, Sgt. J.F. Dunigan, III U.S. 3rd Division LHC

Charlie was an extraordinary individual who was loved, respected, and cherised by the entire Thomas Family. His many stories of growing up with my Father and Uncles will always be cherised by me and I can not believe that all of them are now in Heaven sharing the stories of their youth growing up in Savannah in the 1920's/30's, their war years together, the railroading stories, and of course all the ins and outs of 80 years together. His endearing smile and genuine charm was always a welcomed reprieve from an often crazy world. When my Father died, Charlie was one of the first to call and his talks with me and stories will never be forgotten. I think back fondly to talking with Charlie at the Veterans meeting in October and we laughed until we cried. Little did I know then that God would call his Savannah son home but I rest comfortably tonight knowing that Charlie - his beloved wife and all his friends are together again - riding the clouds with angels as guides.
