Celebrating the life of
Herbert Lynn Richey, Jr.
November 16, 1919 - December 18, 2009
HERBERT LYNN RICHEY, JUNIOR, age 90, passed away on December 18, 2009, at the home of his daughter in Midland, Texas, following a brief illness. He was born on November 16, 1919 in Camden, South Carolina, son of Herbert Lynn Richey and Marie Brewer Richey. He lived with his family in Camden until he went to North Carolina State University, where he earned a B.S. in Agronomy in 1943.
Herb enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and served in Europe during World War II, primarily in France and Germany. Before his deployment, he married high school sweetheart Ida M. Mickey Richey in 1944. Herb was a proud veteran, and counted his trip to the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. as one of the highlights of recent years.
Following his release from the Army, Herb was employed as a chemist by the American Agricultural Chemical Company, and he remained in their employ all of his professional life. His career took him and his family to Columbia, SC; Savannah, GA; Baltimore, MD; Clinton, IA; and Baton Rouge, LA. He retired while in Baton Rouge, and then moved to his long-time family mountain home in Montreat, NC in 1989.
Herb worshipped at the Black Mountain Presbyterian Church, and was a valuable volunteer both there and with the Montreat Conference Center Presbyterian Church U.S.A. and the 10, 000 Villages Self-Help Store.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Peter Mitchell Richey; and his sisters, Mary Richey White and Sara Lynn Richey. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mickey; son H. L. Hank Richey, III; and wife, Jennifer of Montreat, NC; son Joseph Perrin Richey and wife, Bunnie of Savannah, GA; daughter Robin Richey and husband, Gary Brednich of Midland, TX; 6 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at the Greenwich section Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah, GA, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 23, 2009.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Asheville Honor Air Program. Gifts should be sent to the Rotary Club of Asheville, c/o Bill Bass, PO Box 1954, Asheville, NC 28802.

I will always remember how kind your parents were when I stayed with them in the late 60's in Savannah. I remember the wonderful porch and riding on the sailboat. My father always enjoyed the time he spent with 'Buddy'. I'm sure the two of them are having wonderful conversations now.
