TYBEE ISLAND – Walter Leacy Smith, 75, died Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at his home on Tybee Island.
Born February 24, 1934 in Savannah, he was the son of the late William Xavier and Ellen Leacy Smith. He attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic School and was a 1952 graduate of Benedictine Military School.
Mr. Smith served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Macon. He was employed by Southern Bell / AT&T for thirty-four years and was a member of the Communications Workers of America. He was also the owner of Speedy Mart and Walt Smith Co.
He was a communicant of St. Michael's Catholic Church and was a member of the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee and the Knights of Columbus.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Robert Franklin Pierce, his sister-in-law, Mary Ann Smith, and his daughter-in-law, Sally Smith.
He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Catherine Cooley Smith; a brother, William Xavier Smith, Jr.; two sisters, Marian Smith Proper and her husband, Leon, and Eleanor Smith Pierce; his children, Walter Leacy Smith, Jr. and his wife, Kim Rushing Smith, Patrick Joseph Smith and his partner, Joseph Hinely, Kenneth Michael Smith, Michele Powers and her husband, Vincent Powers, Marty Smith and his wife, Lisa Broker Smith, Lisa Wallace and her husband, Colin Wallace; a daughter-in-law, Lisa Parsons Smith; his grandchildren, Steven Clark, Jennifer Clark Wilkens, Shannon Michele Wallace, Daniel Patrick Smith, Catherine Marie Powers, Michael Anthony Wallace, William Thomas Smith, and Broker Martin Smith; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 8, 2010, at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel with a Wake Service at 6:00 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2010, at The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.
Interment will follow in the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
The family suggests that remembrances be sent to St. Michael's Catholic Church, 802 Lovell Ave., Tybee Island. GA 31328.
