Gordon Milton  Cowart

- Savannah – Gordon M. Cowart, 83, known to his friends as "Ulie" died January 29, 2010 at Hospice Savannah, Inc. Born in Savannah, Georgia, he was the son of the late Gene Francis Cowart and Eddie Lee Cowart. Ulie attended Savannah High School and graduated in the class of 1946. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II in the Southern Pacific Theater of war. During his enlistment, he participated in the battles of Saipan and Tinian where he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart Medal. His division received several battle stars and citations for action during the war.

Following the war, he returned to Savannah and went to work in the industrial supply business at Georgia Supply Co. where he enjoyed a long career. He was a member of the Oglethorpe Light Infantry, Zerubbabel Lodge No. 15 F.&A.M. and a member of St. Francis of the Islands Episcopal Church.

His is survived by his wife of 33 years, Caroline Rehm Cowart, his son, Robert F. Cowart Judy, step-daughters, Deborah R. Tomberlin Don, Dana R. Lane Vann, two brothers, Harry F. Cowart and Carl E. Cowart, grandchildren, Rachel Cowart, Allison Ellis Joey, Alaina Owen Brandon, Catherine Tomberlin, Don Tomberlin, Casey Hanks Jarrod, Molly Wey Billy, Whitney Lane, Joshua Lane, Shelby Grace Lane and seven great grandchildren.

Visitation: 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, January 30, 2010 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.

Funeral: 3:00 p.m., Sunday, January 31, 2010 at St. Francis of the Islands Episcopal Church.

Entombment: Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Remembrances: World War II Monument Fund, c/o American Legion Post 184, Thunderbolt, GA 31404 or St. Francis of the Islands Episcopal Church, 590 Walthour Rd., Savannah, GA 31410.
