Hoyt Paul Canady, Sr.
July 01, 1917 - April 12, 2010
SAVANNAH – Hoyt Paul Canady Sr., a resident of Savannah Square Retirement Community, died on Monday, April 12, 2010 following a brief illness. He was 92.
Mr. Canady was a native of Savannah and was a 1937 graduate of Savannah High School, where he served in the Drum and Bugle Corps.
He was employed by the Central of Georgia Railway Company for 26 years in the accounting department until the railroad merged with the Southern Railway in 1963. He worked in the data processing and computer department of the Southern Railway's Atlanta office until his retirement in 1977.
A lifelong Baptist, Mr. Canady was a member of Calvary Baptist Temple in Savannah and after moving to the Atlanta area, became a member of Scott Boulevard Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and member of the finance committee. After returning to Savannah in 2008, he became a member of Hope Baptist Church.
Mr. Canady was a 33rd degree Mason and a member of Solomon's Lodge No. 1, F&AM of Savannah, The Scottish Rite Consistory-Valley of Savannah and was a member of Yaarab Shrine Temple in Atlanta and sang with the Chanters choral group. He also was a Past Worthy Patron of the Order of Eastern Star.
Known affectionately as "Pop" to his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and others, he participated in many volunteer activities but especially enjoyed helping deliver flowers on Valentine's Day and helping disabled young people learn to swim.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Iverson Canady and Callie Chitty Canady; sisters, Evelyn McMakin, Mabel Canady, Elizabeth Canady and Margaret Anderson and granddaughter, Jan Jendrynski Rosser.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Alberta Cobb Canady; sister, Cora King; son, Hoyt P. Canady, Jr. and wife Marilyn of Knoxville, TN; daughters, Alberta Lane and fiancé Dr. John Fillingim of Austin, TX and Savannah; Patricia Rosser and husband David of Milton, FL; grandchildren, The Rev. H. Paul Canady, III of New Bern, NC, Emily Suzanne Canady of Knoxville, Joseph M. "Chip" Lane, III of Savannah, Capt. James M. Lane, USMC of Beaufort, SC, Kevin Rosser of Redding, CA; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel on Thursday, April 15th at 2:00 p.m. Viewing will also be at Fox and Weeks on Wednesday April 14th from 6 - 8 p.m.
Graveside services will be held at Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Tucker, GA on Saturday, April 17th at 11 a.m.
