Celebrating the life of
Helen Waters Woodhouse
July 08, 1925 - May 04, 2010
Helen Waters Woodhouse
Helen Waters Woodhouse, 84, passed away on May 4, 2010 at Memorial Medical Center in Savannah. Born on July 8, 1925 to Joseph Haynes Waters, Sr. and Kathleen Morgan Waters, Helen lived her life as a loving daughter and sister to her three sisters and three brothers and all of their children and grandchildren. In the family she was known and loved as "Dudda", the name that was uttered by a sister's son at the age of three in 1947. This has remained her nickname for all these years. Without children of her own, Dudda became for all of her large family the one to whom a child of any age could go to find understanding, advice, encouragement, motivation and unconditional love.
Upon graduation from The University of Georgia in 1951, Helen became an outstanding first grade teacher. She excelled at motivating young children because she understood them and saw each student's unique talents. She taught at every military location in the U.S. where her husband was assigned and in England for three years. She was noted throughout the Air Force for her ability with children of military families everywhere she taught.
In her retired life, "Dudda" was the one, in a very large family, who always was available for compassion and advice. "Dudda" enjoyed gardening, boating and her spoiled pets. She made and enjoyed sharing the world's best divinity candy. Helen and her husband, Ed, hosted family reunions at their home on the Vernon River each year for over 30 years, and in doing so, helped to keep generations of a scattered family in touch. She was also an active member of The Cresthill Baptist Church.
Helen is survived by her husband of 62 years, Lt. Colonel Edward J. Woodhouse and three sisters and one brother; Dorothy W. Courington, Juanita W. Walls, Nancille W. Peacocke and Lamar D.Waters, as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and wonderful friends and neighbors. She was predeceased by her brothers, Joseph Haynes Waters, Jr. and Robert M. Lefty Waters. She will be greatly missed.

She was a wonderful person and a treasured friend and neighbor. My condolences to Edward and the entire family as I know this is a tremendous loss to them. Helen was our dear friend and neighbor, and it is hard to accept that we can no longer look over the fence to see her waving as she worked with her flowers. The 'Golden Bluff' is a little less golden without her light. We will miss her so much! Ed, you know where we are, so don't be shy about calling if you or Sassy need us. We loved Helen, and we love you and your pup. With great sympathy, Eleanor, Linda, and Carole and critters
