Gerald R. "Butch" Smith
Jerry "Butch" Smith, 72, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2010 with his family by his side after battling a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was a native of Savannah and was a 1956 graduate of Benedictine Military School and a 1961 graduate of the University of Georgia. Butch was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, and was retired after many years in the import vehicle business.
He was an avid golfer and a huge supporter of the Georgia Bulldogs.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Smith and Thomas Smith, and his sister, Peggy Gallagher.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Lucy Anderson Smith, of Greensboro, GA, two daughters, Krista Smith Schumann and her husband, Ric of Holly Springs, North Carolina, and Lisa Elizabeth Smith of Falls Church, Virginia. He is also survived by his sister, Sr. Mary Jogues, R.S.M., of Savannah, two granddaughters, Kelly Elizabeth Schumann and Claire Alyssa Schumann, and several nieces, nephews, and devoted friends.
Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, July 23, 2010 with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m. at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 24, 2010 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the 1956 class of Benedictine Military School.
