Phyllis Hunter Cary

Tybee Island - Phyllis Hunter Cary, 86, died August 27, 2010 at Memorial University Medical Center. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late Alfred W. and Pauline Kness Hunter. Mrs. Cary was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps serving as a Sergeant during World War II. She moved to Tybee Island in 1947 and retired from the City of Tybee Island in 1998 as City Treasurer. She was a member of Trinity Chapel United Methodist Church and volunteered with the Tybee Island Historical Society where she was named Woman of the Year in 1982. Her husband, Robert Floyd Cary, preceded her in death.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Robert B. and Lynn Cary of Savannah; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra C. and Thomas Hawkins of Williamsburg, VA; sister, Shirley E. Knauz of Tybee Island; eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and four nieces.
Visitation: 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sunday, August 29, 2010 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.
Funeral: 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 30, 2010 in the Islands Chapel of Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors.
Burial: Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park.
