Celebrating the life of
Dennis P. Lanier, Jr.
September 23, 1918 - September 04, 2010
SAVANNAH – Dennis P. Lanier, Jr., or "Uncle Dee" as he was affectionately known, died at his residence on Saturday, September 4, 2010, under the exemplary care of Odyssey Hospice.
Dennis was the widower of Norma R. Lanier to whom his loving devotion never wavered, even after her death.
He was predeceased by his parents, Dennis P. Lanier, Sr. and Eulah Thompson Lanier; his brothers, Edwin, John, and Charles Lanier; and his sister, Marjorie L. Hahn.
He is survived by his sons, David L. Carpenter, of West Palm Beach, FL and Vance Carpenter, of Windermere, FL; a grandson, Michael Carpenter; and many nieces and nephews along the Southeastern Coastline.
All four of the "Lanier Boys" served with pride simultaneously in the armed forces during World War II. Dennis served as a Supply Sergeant with the Seventh Army division in England, Belgium, Holland, France, and Germany. He was awarded 3 battle stars, his most cherished being for combat under General George S. Patton at the Battle of the Bulge.
Dennis was a fifty year member of the Alee Temple of the Shrine, serving in the Chanters Unit and then the Carnival Unit. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Consistory, Valley of Savannah, and Solomon's Lodge #1, F&AM.
Dennis retired from Morris-Levy Department Store after 30 years of service.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Thursday, September 9, 2010, at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, September 10, 2010, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Ascension.
Interment will follow in Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park East.
Dennis was very special to me since he was my first friend in Savannah. I will always cherish our many trips to Clary's for breakfast full of great conversation about his life in Savannah and his wonderful wife Norma. Those conversations were always full of laughter and he never failed to put a smile on my face. He was the best neighbor and friend anyone could ask for. Always a gentleman.

I have fond memories of the tea set Uncle Dee gave me for Christmas when I was a little girl. He was a sweet man and I am grateful for the time spent with him.

David, Vance, Michael and family, Though it has been many years since I last saw Dennis in person, I always remember his smile: a smile that lit up his entire face and put everyone at ease. He always showed his kindness to me, my Mom, my Dad and my son Michael; his grandson. I know that the illness he lived with the last few years is over, yet his calm, kind manner will always live on in memory. I wish all of you the best during this sad time. Carmen Carpenter

Dennis was a great grandfather and role model to me. His positive outlook taught me to always appreciate life and recognize how lucky I really am. He was always a pleasure to be around as his smile and laugh come to mind first every time I think of him. I am very thankful he was involved in my life and know he will Rest In Peace. Love, Michael Carpenter
