Bettie Cubbedge Jenkins, 85, died at her home on Wilmington Island on Monday, October 4, 2010, with her husband by her side.
Mrs. Jenkins was born in Savannah on September 7, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Ivey Love Cubbedge and John Hurt Cubbedge of Savannah. She was also preceded in death by her brother, John Hurt Cubbedge, Jr. and her sister, Harriet Cubbedge Phillips.
Bettie Jenkins graduated from Savannah High School. After graduation, she met the love of her life, Hugh Ingles Jenkins, recently returned from World War II and a veteran of the Normandy Invasion. They were married on April 6, 1946.
Mrs. Jenkins was a mother and homemaker whose family always came first. She was an avid world traveler having spent time on all seven continents. She received her pilot's license in the early 1960's. She and her husband, Hugh, spent years flying their plane to coastal Georgia beaches to relax for the day.
Mrs. Jenkins was a member of the Georgia Historical Society, the Historic Savannah Foundation, and the Telfair Museum of Art. She was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames in the State of Georgia, and for several years served as co-chair of the Garden Club of Savannah's annual NOGS Tour.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, Hugh Ingles Jenkins, Jr., her daughter, Barbara Hines-Russell Dr. Preston Russell, and her daughter Nancy Graham Emmerson James Emmerson M.B.E.. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Megan Graham Schoeffler Bryan Schoeffler, and Katherine Graham Schubert Michael Schubert, all of Savannah, four great-grandchildren, one niece, and one nephew.
Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.
Graveside Services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 7, 2010 at Bonaventure Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Savannah Book Festival, 3025 Bull Street, #249, Savannah, GA 31405.
