Celebrating the life of
Dr. John C. Hungerpiller
March 17, 1959 - October 23, 2010
Dr. John C. Hungerpiller, 51, died of a heart attack, Saturday October 23, 2010 at Memorial Health University Medical Center.
He was born in Savannah in 1959 and was a graduate of Savannah Country Day School class of 1977 and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the The University of The South, Sewanee, TN class of 1981. Thereafter, John attended Emory Medical School and graduated in 1985 with the degree Doctor of Medicine. His General Surgery residency was begun at Graduate Hospital, Philadelphia, PA and completed at Memorial Health University Medical Center, Savannah GA. After completion of a Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta, he returned to Savannah in July 1991, joining the practice of Drs. Gongaware, Freeman and Darden. He was inducted into the American College of Surgeons in 1992. John left the active practice of surgery 10 years later to pursue related interests in the medical field. John met his wife Dr. Jeanne Marotta Hungerpiller, of East Stroudsburg, PA, while in Philadelphia and they later married in Savannah in 1991. They have a daughter, Carrie Lee Hungerpiller, 15.
John was a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Century Club of Savannah, the Oglethorpe Club, the Cotillion Club, The German Heritage Society, the Society of Colonials Wars, and was a member of St John's Episcopal Church of Savannah.
Considered by many of his professional peers as a Doc's doc, John was understood by those who came to know him as a passionate individual who pursued technical excellence in all he approached. His friends will miss and remember him in their stories as a fine and humorous companion and his family is better having had him for his 51 years. Above all else, John loved his family, Jeanne and Carrie, and took particular pleasure in being involved in mutual activities with them, whether it be sailing, fishing, or music.
John is survived by his wife Jeanne, daughter Carrie, parents Jim and Page Hungerpiller, sister Susan Hungerpiller, brother Jimmy Hungerpiller, and sister-in-law Angie Hungerpiller all of Savannah; and nieces, Page Oelschig, Kate Oelschig, both residing in Washington, DC, and Auddie Hungerpiller, also of Savannah.

Dear Jeanne - I am embarrassed that I just heard the news of John's death today from Wise Batten. It had been a long since I had spoken with you, but only recently since I have thought of John. He helped shape my life and define what a full life should look like. I will always miss him and never forget him. Bob Schneider
- Bob Schneider, Richmond, VA
My son was born, almost 16 years ago, with a volvulus and Dr. Hungerpiller was able to repair it and save his life. In 2008, after having no contact with Dr. Hungerpiller for 12 years, my son was having more health issues and Dr. Hungerpiller came to the rescue by giving us advice on the types of doctors he should see and where to go in PA. He also become reaquainted with my son. My son was so happy to be in contact with the man who saved his life, as they would share emails and pictures. An email relationship was developing between the two of them. Dr. Hungerpiller even got my son in to contact with his daughter, as they are very close in age. Josh and I are very sad to hear that Dr. Hungerpiller has passed. Thank you Dr. Hungerpiller for saving Josh's life. I will forever be grateful to you for saving my baby boy.
