John Jacob Giachetto
March 21, 1924 - December 01, 2010
SAVANNAH – John Jacob Giachetto, 86, died Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at his home.
John was born and raised in a small town in central Illinois. He received a B.S. in chemical engineering at the University of Illinois. Upon discharge from the Navy he married Marjorie Remlinger of Delphos, Ohio and they moved to Pittsburgh where he received a M.S. degree in chemical engineering. Marge predeceased John in 1991.
They raised a wonderful family of five children; son David, and daughters Teresa Meagher, Sandra Brown, Susan Matey, and Diane Prentiss. Each daughter had three children, and now John has four great-grandchildren. In addition to his immediate family John leaves his best and dearest friend, Aletha Dunlavy.
In 1955 he moved his family to the Dominican Republic where he ran a chemical plant for five and a half years. Their last child Diane was born in the Dominican Republic in 1958.
Returning to the States in 1960, he was employed by the USI chemical division of National Distillers and Chemical Corp. After completing a series of job assignments at various plant locations, he and his family moved to Connecticut. There John took a new job in the USI corporate office in New York as Vice President and General Manager of National Petrochemicals Corp, a joint venture between National Distillers and Owens Illinois. He was named President of National Petrochemicals and concurrently assigned the job of Vice-President and Technical Director of parent company USI.
After 15 years in the New York office John retired and he and Marge moved to their home in the Landings in Savannah. Shortly after retiring he volunteered with Habitat for Humanity building houses. During his ten years with Habitat he designed and led the construction of 15 houses.
John left Habitat and joined Bethesda Home Barn Builders. During his ten years with Barn Builders he took on a variety of jobs, eventually working full time building rugged furniture for the boys.
During his retirement he spent his free time at his hobby- woodworking. He created many beautiful items of furniture for his children and grandchildren.

I was deeply saddened to receive the news that John had passes away. I want to extend my deepest sympathy to his family and close friends. I provided intellectual property counsel to John for many years in his capacity as an executive at USI. We worked closely together on many business ventures which often required traveling to foreign countries. John was a man of admirable character and integrity, a joy to work with and a good friend. He leaves me with many fond memories. Ken Tremain

....I had the privilege and the pleasure of working closely with this fine man at USI for a number of years. He was a consumate professional, a great leader and a joy to work for and with. I know the family and his close friends will miss him sorely. I had the misfortune of losing my wife Virginia to cancer early this year, and can empathise with you all in this instance. God bless. .....Michael Rismondo

John was the best neighbor one could have. He and I enjoyed doing projects at his house and mine.

John was always a true gentleman and very much respected by all. He was the consummate professional. I know at this time it is hard to console your hearts and accept the finality of it all. May the memories bring you comfort. Diane & Peter Bach
