Celebrating the life of
Leona Amy Pierce
July 13, 1933 - January 08, 2011
Tybee Island – Leona Amy "Tommie" Dickey Pierce, 77, entered her eternal rest Saturday, January 8, 2011, while at Memorial Hospital in Savannah. Born in Savannah on July 13, 1933, Tommie was the daughter of Amy Figg Dickey and Jeff Freeman Dickey. She was a graduate of Savannah High School known then as Commercial High. Tommie also graduated from the Warren A. Candler Hospital School of Nursing in 1955. Tommie married Franklin B. "Frank" Pierce, on June 3, 1961. She worked as a Registered Nurse wherever they were stationed while raising her family. After Frank retired in 1974, the family moved to her beloved Back River neighborhood on Tybee Island. Tommie returned to school and received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Armstrong State College now Armstrong Atlantic University in 1981. She joined the Chatham County Health Department in 1976 and retired in 1999.
A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, she was known as "Miss Tommie" or "GranGran" to many and claimed most of Tybee Island as her extended family. She was loved for her warmth, humor, outspokenness, and good stories. She loved Tybee Island and her neighborhood fiercely. She was very involved in genealogy and enjoyed researching her family history. It was an apt enthusiasm for a lady who, with her husband, shared the affectionate description "the parents of the neighborhood."
Tommie was a Dachshund devotee and collected all things Dachshund. Tommie was passionate about her Irish heritage and proudly viewed the St. Patrick's Day parade from her family property at the corner of Price and Broughton every year. Tommie, along with her husband, Frank, was a regular and ardent patron of the Breakfast Club on Tybee Island. Tommie was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church on Tybee Island.
Tommie is survived by her husband of almost 50 years, Franklin B. "Frank" Pierce of Tybee Island; children Benjamin M. Lerma Pierce of Savannah; Amy Pierce David Delamater of Savannah; and Dennis F. Carolyn Pierce of Tybee Island; grandchildren, Franklin J. Pierce and Thomas J. "TJ" Pierce of Tybee Island, David Tucker, Erin and Kari Delamater of Savannah, and her beloved Dachshunds, Duke and Duchess; a sister, Marilyn Skreptoc of Redlands, CA and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, a son, John Michael Pierce, and a brother, Jeff Francis Dickey.
Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Wednesday, January 12th at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel. Father Thomas Peyton will say Mass at 10:00 AM on Thursday, January 13th at St. Michaels Catholic Church on Tybee Island. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances be made to St. Michael's Catholic Church, 802 Lovell Avenue, Tybee Island, GA 31328. Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
