Celebrating the life of
Audrey Alexander Shinkle
February 21, 1916 - February 27, 2011
Audrey Bertha Alexander Shinkle, devoted wife of the late Richard Nixon Shinkle and loving mother and friend of Julie and Jennifer, died at the age of 95 at Hospice House, Savannah, Georgia, on Sunday, February 27, 2011.
She was born February 21, 1916, to Bertha Schmitt and Harry Martin Alexander in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was a 1937 graduate of the University of Cincinnati where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She and her husband, both Cincinnati natives, lived in Westwood most of their married lives, where they were members of the Westwood United Methodist Church. Audrey was a member of the Westwood Women's Club. She moved to Savannah in 2003 and joined Isle of Hope United Methodist Church.
Besides her husband, Audrey was predeceased by her grandson, Jeffrey Allen Dimond, as well as three brothers, Walter Alexander, Howard Alexander, and Marshall Alexander and one sister, Helen Porter. She is survived by her sister, Illa Selbert of Seneca, SC; brother-in-law, Robert T. Shinkle Anne, of Vancouver, Canada; her daughters and their spouses, Julie and Dr. Keith Dimond of Savannah and Jennifer and Kirk Carr of Clinton, CT; granddaughter, Emily Dimond Jowers Richard, of Savannah; and grandsons, Jacob Dimond Charlene, also of Savannah; Kirk Carr III Laurel, of New Canaan, CT; and Blake Carr Laurie of Stamford, CT. Survivors also include six great grandchildren: Nicholas and William Jowers, Patrick and Rebecca Dimond, and Audrey and Nathaniel Carr and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at The Isle of Hope United Methodist Church, Thursday, March 3, 2011 at 2:30 p.m., with a reception to follow. A private service and burial will be held at Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jeffrey Allen Dimond Endowment Fund for the Hope Choir at Isle of Hope United Methodist Church, 412 Parkersburg Road, Savannah, Georgia, 31406; to Hospice Savannah, P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA, 31416; or to the charity of choice.
Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel, Savannah, and Bolton & Lunsford Funeral Home, Cincinnati, are in charge of arrangements.
