Celebrating the life of
James Joseph Kehoe, Jr.
June 20, 1931 - April 15, 2011
- TYBEE ISLAND - Maj. Kehoe died peacefully at his Tybee residence on April 15, 2011 after a brief illness. He was born June 20, 1931 to Kathleen Doolan Kehoe and James J. Kehoe. He was the last surviving grandson of William and Anna Flood Kehoe. At an early age his parents and sister preceded him in death. His aunt and uncle, Col. & Mrs. Joseph A. Logan, opened their hearts and home to him and he was raised as an additional brother to their children.
Jimmy graduated from Benedictine Military School and immediately went to Japan with the Georgia National Guard during the Korean War. After the war he graduated from Armstrong Junior College and then from the University of Georgia, with a BBA and an MBA. Jimmy reenlisted in the Air Force and served for 25+ years, and his major field was hospital administration, serving in many different commands including Japan, Thailand, Pakistan, England, Germany and the United States. Jimmy received many commendations and honors in the service. His quest for knowledge never diminished while serving on active duty, and he received an MA from Ball State University and a PhD in economics from Clayton University. He retired in 1982 and again lived with the Logans. After their deaths Jimmy built a house on Tybee. The island proved to be his earthly paradise, and his friends and acquaintances were legion. He never met a stranger.
During his retirement Jimmy became active in the Navy League, serving as Georgia State President, and was elected to the National Board of Directors, receiving numerous awards.
Jimmy was a member of the Hibernian Society of Savannah, and served for many years as Chairman of the Historical Committee. He was responsible for the publication of the reproduction of the book "The First 100 Years of the Hibernian Society of Savannah," and was an active participant in the Organizing Committee for the celebration of the Society's 200th Anniversary in 2012.
Jimmy is survived by Marie Logan Lerch of Baltimore Maryland, Joseph and Martha Logan of Titusville, New Jersey, William and Marty Logan of Bal Harbor, Florida, J. Robert and Virginia Logan of Savannah, William and Helen Doolan of Savannah, and E. Eloy and Connie Doolan of Greensboro, North Carolina, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, as well as many Kehoe relatives.
Jimmy was a communicant of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Tybee Island. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 2:00 PM at St. Michael's Church, Tybee, with interment at a later date. Honorary pallbearers will be members of The Hibernian Society, Remler's Romeos and the Navy League. Remembrances to the charity of your choice.
