Charles F. Barnwell, Sr.
February 08, 1924 - May 22, 2011
Savannah- Charles Forrester Barnwell, Sr., 87, went to be with Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 22, 2011.
Born in Banks County, Georgia on February 8, 1924, he relocated to Emanuel County area with his family in 1928. He attended the Emanuel County Institute and worked for Henry Ford in Richmond Hill prior to his service in the United States Navy during the Second World War. A Pacific Theater veteran, he completed the war on Okinawa. Following the war, he attended the University of Georgia at Hunter Field in Savannah. Mr. Barnwell was a dedicated employee of Sears, Roebuck and Company from 1947 until his retirement in 1984.
A member of Ardsley Park Baptist Church since August 24, 1947, he was a deacon since 1953. He was awarded Deacon Emeritus in 2009. He was a member of the Mark Bible Class. Mr. Barnwell was a member of the Ancient Landmark Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed the outdoors, working in his yard, and being with his family.
Charles was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Jean Strickland, his parents Charles and Margie Forrester Barnwell and five brothers and five sisters.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Nancy Cordray Barnwell, son Charles Forrester Barnwell, Jr. Cindy, son Ashley Anson Barnwell Dana, brother J. C. Barnwell Gloria of Monticello Florida, sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday, May 24 from 5 to 7 PM at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors Hodgson Chapel. The funeral will be Wednesday, May 25 at 2 PM at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors Hodgson Chapel with burial to follow at Hillcrest Abbey East. Rev. Johnny Dozier will officiate.
