Mamie Evelyn Carter Rowan

Mamie Evelyn Carter Rowan was born in Atkinson, NC on January 22, 1925 to Walter Stephen Carter Sr. and Mamie Robinson Henry Carter. She was the youngest of four children, her siblings: Bill Carter, Bob Carter and Catherine Keith. She worked in the Wilmington shipyard during WWII. After the war she met and married Samuel Wood Rowan Jr. of Wilmington, NC who preceded her in death in 2002 after 52 years of marriage. She is survived by two daughters: Cynthia Rowan Hilley of Dunwoody, GA and Catherine Rowan-Collier of Destin, FL. She has four grandchildren: Aubrey Richard Hilley, David Payne Hilley, & Mary Elizabeth Hilley Nordan all of Atlanta, GA; Phillip Wells of Chattanooga, TN and one great-grandson Sam Wells.
Evelyn was a member of Memorial Baptist Church and the Exchangette Club in Savannah. She and Sam loved to travel. She also enjoyed reading & playing bridge. She resided at Savannah Commons until she had recently relocated to the Gardens of Sandy Springs in Atlanta to be nearer to family. She died peacefully in her sleep early Tuesday morning, June 7th. A visitation will be held at the Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel on Sunday, June 12th from 3:00-5:00 pm. There will be a graveside service Monday at 10AM on June 13th at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Isle of Remembrance. She was well-loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
