James Arthur Jim Anderson, III, age 83, died peacefully at his home on Tybee Island, Georgia, on June 11, 2011.
He was born on July 4, 1927, in Ashland, Kentucky, the son of the late James Arthur Anderson, Jr. and Anne Settlemeyer Anderson. He is survived by his wife, Louise Allen Anderson, of Tybee Island; sister, Carolyn Anderson Beimdiek Don of St. Louis, Missouri; son, Frederick Stuart Anderson Betty and daughter, Drusilla Linier Anderson, both of Nashville, Tennessee; grandchildren James Stuart Anderson and Sara Elizabeth Anderson of Nashville; and stepchildren Jeffrey Allen Sickel Belma of Evanston, Illinois, and Allison Sickel Clifton Ian of Denver, Colorado.
Jim graduated from Ashland High School a semester early in December 1944 to enlist in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, he received his undergraduate degree in economics from Washington and Lee University where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi and elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received his law degree from Washington and Lee University School of Law and was a member of the Law Review. Early in his career he served as chief tax counsel for Ashland Oil, Inc. He had a private law practice in Murray, Kentucky, until his retirement when he moved to Tybee Island in 1999. He is the author of a published biography of Fred M. Vinson, former Supreme Court Justice of the United States. He was a devoted member of All Saints Episcopal Church where he served as Senior Warden of the Vestry and chairman of the Endowment Fund committee. He was a volunteer at the Tybee Island Historical Society and served on the Board of Directors. He also was a docent for the Telfair Museum of Art. He was a Kentucky Colonel and an active member of the Montgolfier Society. His wit and wisdom will be missed by his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held Monday, June 20, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations be made to All Saints Episcopal Church Endowment Fund, P.O. Box 727, Tybee Island, Georgia, 31328.
