Harlan Emery Sterling, 95, passed away Friday, July 15, 2011 at Hospice House. He was born April 2, 1916 in Westbrook, Maine. He was a member of White Bluff United Methodist Church. Emery was a member of the Savannah Elks Lodge 183 and was Elk of the year from 1981 to 1982, and also served as an officer of the Lodge. He was a member of The Military Order of World Wars, Savannah Chapter, and also a member of the Tybee Historical Society. He was a member of the 5th Maine Regiment in Peaks Island, Maine, and a former longtime adult member of the Savannah Boy Scout Troop 30. He also was an officer in the United States Coast Guard for 31 years. Emery was the last surviving member of the U.S. Lighthouse Service.

He was preceded in death 2006 by his wife, Mary H. Sterling.

He is survived by his son, Allen T. Everett, of Savannah, son and daughter-in-law, Malcolm P. Sterling, II, and Karen Sterling, of Dedham, MA, grandchildren, Cathy Stevie, and Debbie Connelly, both of New Jersey, and Christopher Sterling, of Boston, and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service to honor his life will be held Sunday, July 17, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel with The Reverend John Haney officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
