Celebrating the life of
Daniel C. Furtado
September 04, 1934 - August 12, 2011
Statesboro - Mr. Daniel Clinton Furtado, age 76, died Friday, August 12, 2011 at the Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro.
Mr. Furtado was born September 4, 1934 in Lowell, MA and attended parochial schools in the area prior to joining the Air Force in 1952. Mr. Furtado retired in 1972, having proudly served in The Korean Conflict, The Vietnam War and tours of duty to many locations in the world. He was stationed at Hunter Army Airfield GA, Travis Air Force Base CA, Dow Air Force Base ME and Barksdale Air Force Base LA home of the USAF Strategic Air Command. Mr. Furtado was profoundly patriotic and throughout his military career he always strived for excellence and never questioned the call to duty whether it was in Korea, Vietnam or the Polar Ice Cap. Mr. Furtado flew on B29 aircraft, and he served as a boom operator on KB50, KC97 aircraft and was in the first class of jet KC135 which is still in service today. While stationed at Barksdale he was also an instructor and a member of Stanboard for the 2nd Bomb Wing, an elite standard setting crew designation.
While stationed at Hunter Army Airfield, Mr. Furtado met and married his loving wife, Martha Perry Furtado in 1955. Mr. Furtado and his wife spent many hours gardening together and also enjoyed bowling, golfing, bridge, pinochle and attending their children's various activities. Before his health declined, Mr. Furtado could often be spotted meticulously working in his yard which was admired and enjoyed by his family and many who passed by. Mr. Furtado was also a Mason and a Shriner in the Alee Temple of Savannah, GA.
Upon retiring from the USAF he moved to Statesboro in 1973, Mr. Furtado started his second career in the automotive industry with Youngblood Ford, Rozier Ford and Metter Ford before retiring in 2000.
In 2002, Mr. Furtado suffered an aneurism while working in the yard and began a valiant battle with Alzheimer's in 2006. He passed away peacefully with loved ones at his side and with prayers given by the Rev. Steve Darby.
For those who knew him, Mr. Dan could always be relied upon as the "voice of reason and what made sense". At family gatherings he always made sure, with the help of his wife Martha, that everything was "just so" for all to enjoy. He was a dedicated, supportive, loving husband and father and will be missed immensely.
Mr. Furtado was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph F. and Helen, brother Joseph F. and sister Susan. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Martha Perry Furtado, two daughters and one son, Alice Furtado, Valerie Dukes and Daniel C. Furtado, Jr.; three grandchildren, Danielle Furtado, Elise Dukes and Daniel C. Furtado III; sisters, Catherine Huntley , Marion Baril and Ann Silva; brothers-in-law Emmett L. Perry, Frank D. Perry and John R. Perry; and his beloved pets Rudy, Sport, Sassy, Princess and many others before them.
