Celebrating the life of
Ouita Bowles Miller
July 23, 1924 - August 16, 2011
Savannah- Ouita Bowles Miller peacefully joined her Lord & Savior on August 16 with her family at her side. She was born to Jim & Kathryn Bowles in New Orleans, Louisiana on July 23, 1924, and was reared in Jackson, Mississippi. She attended the University of Mississippi and then married John B. Miller of Macon, Georgia on June 1, 1944. They lived there following World War II until they moved to Savannah in 1952.
While her husband built a law practice, Ouita devoted herself to her family and community. She was a member of the Decorative Arts Trust and volunteered with the Red Cross. She was President of the Children's Theater, active in the Junior League, and served on the Telfair Academy Board. Her family remembers her love of history and her years as a tour guide for the Historic Savannah Foundation and 10 years chairing the Owens Thomas House Committee.
She also loved her family, Christ Church, and the Atlanta Braves. She had a ferociously loyal personality, unwavering principles, a powerful inner strength, and an unlimited love for her husband and children. She was a good wife, mother and grandmother.
Ouita is survived by her husband, John, three children, John B. Jay Miller, Jr. and wife Linda of Atlanta, Kathryn Johnson and husband Eric of Savannah, and Elizabeth Bowerman and husband David of Atlanta. She has six grandchildren – Troup and Alex Miller, Righton and Marcus Johnson and wife Lauren, and Kate and Thomas Bowerman.
A private graveside service will be conducted at Greenwich Cemetery on Saturday, August 20. Remembrances should be designated for Christ Anglican Church or Hospice Savannah.
