Joseph Raymond Sheppard, Jr.

Joseph Raymond Sheppard, Jr. passed away October 4, 2011, after courageously battling a number of illnesses for years. He was 72 years old.
Raymond was married 45 happy years to his wife, Julie. They had two children: Lynda, who survives him, and Joe, who surely greeted him in Heaven when he passed. He was "Papa" to three grandchildren who brought him immeasurable joy: Nick, Josh and Jake. Raymond loved and lived his life for his family. He greatly enjoyed several pets who bonded closely with him.
Raymond was born and grew up in Savannah. He graduated from Savannah High School and attended Savannah Technical School. Raymond served in the U.S. Army Artillery and was honorably discharged in 1962. While in Colorado with the Army, he met and married Julie. In 2001 he retired from Georgia Pacific.
In addition to his wife Julieta "Julie" and daughter Lynda Miller Geoff, Raymond is survived by three grandchildren: Nicholas Miller, Joshua Miller and Jacob Miller; and siblings: Brenda Mattingly John, Susan Bell Ross, Larry Sheppard and Carolyn Carter Bill. He had numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Raymond was preceded in death by his son, Joseph "Joey" Raymond Sheppard III, and his parents, Joseph Raymond Sheppard and Lucy Janie Sheppard.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, October 7, 2011 in the Islands Chapel of Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors conducted by The Reverend Patrick O'Brien. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until time of service.
Remembrances: The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a contribution to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association be made in Raymond's name.
