KATHRYN PAPPAS
-SAVANNAH - Kathryn Pappas, 89, of Savannah, GA, died October 5, 2011at Savannah Square Retirement Community. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends.
She was a native of Union, SC, and was a graduate of Union High School and of the University of South Carolina. She had been a resident of Savannah for forty-one years.
She was a member of St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church, St. Barbara's Philoptochos, the Savannah Golf Club, the Savannah Garden Club and the Huntingdon Club. She was also a past member of the Savannah Women's Federation and of the Savannah Council, Navy League.
A lifetime volunteer, she was twice chosen American Red Cross Volunteer of the Year, first in Bangkok, Thailand and again at Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, DC. Locally she was a volunteer for many years with the Tax Counseling for the Elderly program and the Ronald McDonald House. She had also served as a docent for the Green-Meldrim House.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Colonel Gus J. Pappas, USAF, Ret. and
a grandchild, Christopher J. Higgins.
She is survived by three children, James C. Pappas, M.D. and his wife Renée of Panama City, FL, Mary P. Hough and her husband Steve of Panama City, FL, and William C. Pappas and his wife Elaine of Athens, GA. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Eugenia P. Becknell and her husband Britt of Spartanburg, SC, Angela P. Cave and her husband Randy of Casselberry, FL, Christopher J. Pappas and his wife Emily of Apopka, FL, and five great-grandchildren. A beloved sister-in-law, Sophie P. Franks of Savannah also survives, as well as former daughter-in-law Sandra G. Meredith of Spartanburg, SC.
Visitation will be at 6 p.m. and Trisagion Prayer Service will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, October 10, 2011 at St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church. Funeral Service will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church with burial at Bonaventure Cemetery, Fr. Vasile Mihai and Fr. John Caparisos officiating.
A reception will be held at the Hellenic Center following the funeral.
