Celebrating the life of
Marilyn Elmore Wood
February 11, 1939 - November 04, 2011
SAVANNAH –Marilyn Wood, widow of the late Cyrus S. Wood, died Friday, November 4, 2011, at Memorial University Medical Center.
Marilyn was born in Albany, GA on February 12, 1939. Her family moved to Savannah when she was an infant and she spent the remainder of her 72 years here. She graduated from St. Vincent's Academy where she was a member of the St. Vincent's Choir. In addition to her lovely soprano voice, Marilyn was a beautiful young woman who modeled at the former Fine's Department Store on Broughton Street.
Marilyn was Miss Savannah from 1955-1956 and was chosen to participate in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, CA on New Year's Day in 1956. That same year she met the love of her life, Cyrus S. Wood, and after their marriage at Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church, they began a life together which lasted until Cy's death in 1986. Cy and Marilyn were active members of Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church where they both sang in the choir and were also members of the Savannah Symphony Chorus. They led singing at the Tattnall County Campground each summer and used their talents to sing at many revivals, weddings, and funerals in the area. She was a member of Isle of Hope United Methodist Church.
After Cy's death she began a career in medical records transcription which she enjoyed until her retirement 2 years ago. She was an exceptional seamstress, creating many beautiful quilts, and delighting in her volunteer work with the Prayer Shawl Ministry and The Waving Girls Smocking Guild that donates "Wee Care Gowns" for deceased infants at Local hospitals.
Marilyn had three children, Deanne Butch Gary, Michael Wood Duke, and Roger B. Wood who preceded her in death. She is also survived by a brother, Edward C. Elmore III Mary, three grandchildren, Melissa Wood, Elijah Butch, and Isabel Butch; and a sister-in-law, Carolyn Solana. There are several nieces and nephews and many close friends from her work at the hospital and sewing guilds. A special delight in her life was her Shih Tzu, Bernie, who was her constant companion.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
The funeral service will be at 1:00 pm on Monday, November 7, 2011, at Isle of Hope United Methodist Church.
Burial will follow in the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery.

All though I never had the privelege of meeting Ms. Marilyn, she always knew how to brighten up my day on the phone while starting to attend South University. She has truly had an impact on me whether it be through her many remarkable stories or joke emails, and I am truly saddened by the news. The Wood family is in my prayers.

To the Wood Family, the loss of Mrs. Marilyn has saddened our family. We purchased the Roger Wood tent from Mrs. Marilyn at the Campground in 1997. The memories that your family made there has continued with my family as we grow. Each year at campmeeting we talk about Mrs. Marilyn and her dedication to the campground. Our family says thanks for making a dream come true. You all are in our thoughts and prayers!
