Celebrating the life of

Patrick J. O'Kane

December 11, 1931 - November 07, 2011

Patrick J. O'Kane

Tybee Island - Patrick Joseph O'Kane died November 7, 2011, after a prolonged illness. Patrick was born in New York City on December, 11, 1931 to Katherine McWilliams and Patrick John O'Kane of Derry, Northern Ireland. He was the younger brother of John James O'Kane. He was educated in New York City's parochial school system. After graduation from high school, he joined the Air Force in 1950.

After being discharged from the Air Force, Patrick married Ann T. McGuaran in 1954. He later joined IBM and they moved to Burlington, Vermont. He spent the next 32 years working for IBM splitting time between manufacturing and sales in Vermont, Iowa and Illinois.

After retiring from IBM in Chicago, Patrick searched the Southeast from New Orleans to Virginia Beach for a place to retire. He chose Tybee Island because it had a Catholic Church and an Irish bar. He loved his family, the company of friends, discussion of world events, good food preferably cooked by him, the New York Times crossword puzzle, a cold beer in a glass, a good murder mystery, a Manhattan the color of Trigger, Roy Roger's horse and Tybee Island. If prompted, he would tell you that he was a great dancer and an accomplished saucier.

With great sorrow, Patrick leaves behind his sons, Rory Christy and Matthew Julie, grandchildren, Jessica, Regan, Kevin and Brennan, great grandson, Malachi, brother John Terry, nieces Patty and Christine Lisk Brian, nephew, Fr. John, cousins Bruce North and Marion McGuinness and their families.

Always one to love a gathering with good food, drink and conversation, Patrick leaves behind wonderful friends on Tybee and Savannah, many of whom joined him for an 80th birthday party in October. Patrick and his family wish to thank his caregivers Bill Brewer, Jill Ostrum, and Lou Kietzman; and his 24/7 maintenance crew: Wyman Sharp, Sam Tomlin, Shirley Barber, and all of his friends for the tremendous support and comfort they provided to Patrick during his illness.

A service will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Michael's Church, Tybee Island, followed by a reception at the American Legion Hall to have a parting glass, reminisce about Patrick and solve the world's problems.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations be made to St. Michael's Church.

To Patrick's Family: As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss. Please find comfort in the following Bible verse, John 11: 11 where Jesus said: ..”Lazarus our friend has gone to rest, but I am journeying there to awaken him from sleep.” Please also find comfort in knowing that our Almighty Heavenly Father holds out the hope of the resurrection and the ability to see our loved ones again.
